Bennex Mwamlima and 20 others in Mzuzu defect to MCP from PP
Runner up in the 2014 parliamentary elections for Mzuzu City Constituency, Bennex Mwamlima Saturday dumped the People’s Party (PP) and joined Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Mwamlima, who was one of PP’s heavy weights in the city, was officially welcomed to MCP in company of 20 other members who followed him from the PP.
Speaking during the welcoming ceremony at MCP’s regional offices, the businessman turned politician likened his journey to MCP to that of the biblical prodigal son.
“MCP is a mother to all parties in this country because that is where they all originated from.
“Coming to MCP today is like returning from a long journey, just like the prodigal son,” he said.
He then appealed to the new members into the MCP not to hold grudges against anyone including those still with PP.
“I can’t promise you that people will not talk but don’t feel bad about your decision; there’s nothing wrong with a child going back to his or her parents after exploring the world on his own,” he said.
MCP Regional Chair, Gracious Soko said the coming in of Mwamlima is a sign that people have faith in the party.
“Our plea to our new members is that they should not hold back because they are people with experiences that can help advance the party,” he said.
Apart from Mwamlima and his followers, five other members of the Freedom Party were also welcomed into the MCP.
