Bingu helicopter aborts flight at Dedza
Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika escpaed death when his helicopter had to be diverted on its flight to Thyolo on Saturday because of bad weather.
The presidential helicopter was forced to land in Dedza as Mutharika was en route from Lilongwe to Thyolo where he was going to attend the celebrate the golden jubilee of priesthood for emeritus Bishop Felix Mkhori, who clocks 50 years.
“The plane had landed in Dedza with Mutharika and his wife Callista” said a top government official.
Meanwhile, in Thyolo, a director of ceremonies at the function announced that the President would not be able to attend the function due to the bad weather which has affected the helicopter.
It was announced that the President’s brother, Peter Mutharika, heir apparent, would be the guest of honour.
However, the presidential convoy carrying Mutharika was heading to Thyolo at the time of posting the story.
Bishop Mkhori , a close ally of President Mutharika, had the Eucharistic celebration mass of the golden jubilee last week in Chikhwawa where he served long as a bishop of the diocese.
He is also head of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry for the July 20 anti-government protests that ended with 19 people dead.
