Bingu wants Mtumodzi back as press officer

By Wanga Gwede, Nyasa Times

President Bingu wa Mutharika wants former presidential press officer Chikumbutso Mtumodzi to return to the State House and resume his former position replacing Albert Mungomo, Nyasa Times understands.

Ironically Mungomo replaced Mutharika’s longest serving and effective Press Officer Mtumodzi, who is currently the deputy principal secretary in the Ministry of the Elderly and Disability.

President Mutharika wants Mtumodzi back, sources at State House have disclosed.

“Mr. Mungomo has proved useless and the bwana is not impressed with his work. So, he mentioned of getting back Mr. Mtumodzi so that he can help His Excellency in the campaign for 2014 elections,” the well-placed  source said.

Mtumodzi: Most effective press officer for Bingu

The source further said that Mutharika opted for Mtumodzi again because of his vast experience in propaganda.

Mutharika relocated Mtumodzi to the Ministry of Persons with Disabilities and the Elderly following some controversies surrounding him when he was Director of Information.

Mtumodzi was also deemed too powerful for other government officials who did not want him at State House.

Mungomo, who has been told to go back to his base, state broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, has failed to impress Mutharika as state press officer.

He has been passive in his position to the extent that Mutharika chose Dr. Hetherwick Ntaba as his spokesperson under the nose of Mungomo.

Justifying his existence at State House, Mungomo gave himself the job of being Master of Ceremonies at some State Functions and weddings of some key figures.

In the media circles, Mungomo has left nothing to be remembered for as state press officer apart from boasting at beer places in his tight jacket and issuing threats to media personalities.

Many observers have told Nyasa Times that Mtumodzi will be more effective for Mutharika.
