Bingu’s death foils Peter Mutharika’s wedding

Fate foils the best laid plans, so they say. Whosoever tweaked this axiom must have had in mind Thyolo East Parliamentarian and ousted Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation minister, Peter Arthur Muthalika.

Nyasa Times has gathered from reliable sources that President Bingu wa Mutharika’s untimely death from an impulsive cardiac arrest on April 5 thwarted plans for his brother ‘s secret wedding to a Benin lady which the Mutharika dynasty had earmarked to be the country’s next First Lady in 2014 after supposedly succeeding his brother as head of state.

But God had other plans.

Peter Mutharika was due to get married in Benin in a furtive low-key marriage ceremony last Saturday April 7 2012.

Peter Mutharika: Kiss it Gertrude Maseko

Sources close to the Mutharika’s confided in Nyasa Times that preparations were already finalised for the president’s brother to tie a knot in the infinitesimal West African country where the nuptials were supposed to take place.

“He was due to fly to Cotonou, Benin, on Friday April 6 for a secret wedding only for his brother to kick the bucket on Thursday,” said the source.

Peter Mutharika said he could not comment because he is still mourning his brother and that he can only grant interview “after the mourning period.”

The news of the wedding was kept as a top covert within the inner circle as Peter surreptitiously made cloak-and-dagger arrangements for his wedding. It was feared that it would spark resentment from a lot of Malawians who have for long anticipated that the late president’s brother was taking Gertrude Handrina Maseko a member of parliament from Balaka for a wife.

It is not immediately known if the former American based law professor who wanted to illicitly take over power after the death of his tyrant brother, will go ahead with the marriage after mourning his elder brother as the purpose of marrying that woman was to make the Benin lady to become Malawi’s First Lady.

Professor Mutharika is a widower who has three grown up children, two girls and a boy.

“I was married for 30 years and had three children with my dear wife. Unfortunately she died of cancer leaving me with the responsibility of raising the children as a single parent,” he is on record saying.

“I do have three children, they all lawyers, practicing law in the United States, one of them is the professor of law at one of the leading universities and a couple of grandchildren,” he said.

“It has been hard to live as a widower and now I have found a woman that I feel can make a good wife,” he said.

Among other women Mutharika has been linked with include lawmaker Anna Kachikho, presidential advisor of NGOs and civil society Bessie Chirambo, Wilsa-Malawi boss Seodi White-Munthali and Annie Fletcher, owner and director of Annies Lodge.

The women all downplayed assertions of dating Mutharika.
