Bishop Mtumbuka challenges chiefs on albino attacks

Catholic Church’s Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of Karonga Diocese has challenged chiefs in the district to join forces in denouncing abduction and killing of people with albinism.

This comes barely a month after a one-year-old girl with albinism was abducted from the arms of her mother while asleep at Khwawa in Traditional Authority Wasambo in the district.

During distribution of relief food at Khwawa Village in the area Friday, Bishop Mtumbuka said time has come for chiefs in the district to join the bandwagon in denouncing the malpractice of abducting people with albinism.

He said there is much belief in superstition that people with albinism can bring about wealth, hence perpetration of the malpractice in the communities.

“As a Catholic Conference, we had a meeting on the same with senior government officials to chart the way forward regarding abduction of people with albinism.

“We are doing all we can through our various structures in bringing awareness to the communities to completely put an end the barbaric act,” said Mtumbuka.

He asked Civil Society Organizations, faith groups and other stakeholders to join hands and take an active role to end the malpractice.

On relief food distribution exercise, Mtumbuka said the Catholic Church attaches importance in giving to the needy.

He said that was why the church distributed the food to hunger stricken people who were affected by disasters during 2017-2018 growing season.

“Works of charity are an integral part in as far as the Catholic Faith is concerned and we will go anywhere with relief food irrespective of denomination.

When we have, we give, and when we do not give it means we do not have,” said Bishop Mtumbuka.

One of the beneficiaries, Joyce Nyasulu, thanked Mtumbuka for the relief programme saying for three months since December (2018), people have been assisted with a 50Kg bag of maize, a 10 litres pail of sugar, beans and 2 litres of cooking oil.

The relief programme is funded by Copel Family of Mexico through Catholic Relief Services in Malawi and Karonga District has about 2500 beneficiaries.
