Who is Black Maria? Speaker asks Minister of Internal Security
Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya has to ask Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Cecilia Chazama to clarify on the term ‘Black Maria’ used in the House.
“The Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, just for the benefit of the Chair. Who is Black Maria?” asked Msowoya.
Chazama had mentioned ‘Black Maria’ during debate on her ministerial statement on the current situation of the alleged bloodsuckers in Malawi,
Responding, She told the Speaker that Black Maria is the “famous huge vehicle used by police.”
She said: “ Actually, in Blantyre North when the current State President was being arrested, they wanted to put him in that big car at the Commissioners’ place and the Honourable Member for Blantyre North was the one who stood up and said no you are not going to put him in there because he is not armed and not harmful to any Malawian.”
Chazama stressed that Black Maria is “a very famous vehicle. When people see it they run away.”

I think most people are not conversant with the word Black Maria, these are the old black landrover 109 police vehicles that police was using up to early 1990s. It had a white top
They were part of the torture equipment during the Kamuzu ‘s authoritarian rule. Msowoya knows better he just wanted a simple debate for a breather.
