Blame game over Malawi medical workers salary delays: Strike rages on

The delays in payment of salaries for medical workers in Malawi’s northern district of Mzimba has degenerated into blame game between ministry of health and ministry of finance with one blaming another  for the action that has forced the medical workers to stage a strike.

Medical workers at Mapale in the city of Mzuzu and Mzimba hospitals have since Tuesday been staging a strike in protest against the delays of their June salaries a development that has seen patients return home without getting medical attention.

Patients on admission get little assistance from the skeleton staff that  were handling emergency cases.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health Henry Chimbali told a local radio that the problem stems from delays at Ministry of Finance in releasing the money for salaries for the health workers in the district.

But an official in the ministry of finance Nations Msowoya has trashed Chimbali’s statement saying the health ministry should shoulder the blame itself for its tendency of submitting late salary vouchers.

Msowoya says the ministry received the documents last week but assured the workers that they may receive their payment early next week.

However the striking workers have maintained their stand saying they will resume work once they get their salaries.
