Blantyre City Assembly defies court order: Demolished illegal shacks

Blantyre City Council on Monday defied a High Court order and went ahead demolishing illegal developments along Soche mountain.

BCC last week was stopped on its tracks as it was in the process of demolishing the developments after one of the illegal residents, Chief Chisa obtained court injunction, stopping the council or its agents continuing with the exercise.

But on Monday morning, the BCC officials in their patrol vehicles invaded the illegal settlement close to Chilobwe Township and demolished some houses.

The demolishing exercise that never last hours did not unfold without little drama as commotion erupted when some of the illegal settlers tried to put up a resistance.

BCC did not pull back instead they managed to arrest some of the resisting residents.

Chief Chisa last week obtained the injunction, arguing the BCC conduct denies the residents their wellbeing as they don’t have anywhere else to go.

BCC together with Malawi Housing Corporation, years back ordered the encroachers to relocate.

The encroachers have been resisting the ordr all along as they continue constructing different structures from shacks to mansion, deforesting the mountain in the process.
