Bombshell? Phoya to address media Tuesday
Amid persistent rumours about his potential presidential bid, Blantyre Rural East Member of Parliament, Henry Duncan Phoya (HDP) says he will address a news conference in Lilongwe on Tuesday.
Rumours have been circulating that Phoya was either rejoinig United Democratic Front (UDF) or the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
But the former justice minister told Nyasa Timesthat he was going to clear “the mist” at a news conference on Wednesday.
“I will be addressing journalists and allow them to ask me any probing questions on [Tuesday],” Phoya said.
The 45-year-old lawmaker told Nyasa Times recently said he does not harbour presidential ambitions.
“I want to run away from this issue of personalising these things. I want to join a team of likeminded people to help fix our nation,” said Phoya.
He added: “[Presidential] aspirations should be secondary.”
“I don’t have presidential ambitions but I have passion for this country,” stressed the former minister in both Bakili Muluzi and Bingu wa Mutharika administrations.
But said those asking him to run for president were simply exercising their freedom of expression
He nonetheless said he will consider entering the 2014 presidential race.
The MP, who was key in saving President Bingu wa Mutharika “from the jaws of impeachment” when he had a minority government, was expelled from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) after opposing the enactment of repressive laws including the Injunctions bill.
