Boxing promoter advises MABA to change attitude

Boxing promoter Stephen Mawezi Msiska of Mawezi Freight Handlers, who sponsored the international women’s World Boxing Forum/Africa (WBF) championship, has advised the Malawi Boxing Association (MABA) to change its attitude towards boxers and the promoters if the sport is to develop in the country.

Mawezi said this following the questioning by MABA about the credibility of the light middleweight World Boxing Forum (WBF) which Malawi’s female boxing pugilist Agnes Mtimaukanena won few weeks ago.

Mtimaukanena was given the belt after knocking down Kenyan boxer Suzan Anderson.

MABA said the belt is fake but Mawezi described the sentiments as “shocking” and a “disgrace”.

Mtimaukanena: WBA champion

“That comment is shocking and disgrace to come from a body like MABA,” said Mawezi.

He disclosed that the belt is genuine and also revealed that it is recognized by all international boxing bodies and the world at large.

“She (Mtimaukanena) is African champion and the whole world recognizes that; Agnes is on position 22 on the list of female boxers in the world” said Mawezi.

The promoter further faulted MABA of associating with international bodies dealing with only amateur boxers.

He finally advised MABA to be proud of Agnes whom he described as a good boxer.

“MABA need to change its altitude and be proud that we have great boxers here in Malawi in the name of Agnes Mtimaukanena and Isaac Chilemba who have managed to put Malawi on the world map,” he said.

Mtimaukanena title earned her an audience with Malawi’s new President Joyce Banda at Mtunthama Sate House in Lilongwe where the President gave her K500, 000.00 as a token of appreciation for her achievements.
