Bullets defender Douglas Chirambo dies, tributes pour in
Big Bullets defender Douglas Chirambo who took a break from playing soccer late last year due to illness has has succumbed to intracranial neoplasm (brain tumour).

Chirambo has been in and out of hospital for over the past four months.
A brother to the deceased Bernard Chirambo confirmed the death in an interview with Nyasa Times on Sunday.
According to Bernard, Douglas died at Thyolo District Hospital where he was expecting an ambulance to transfer him to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
Bernard further said the body of the late legend Bullets star will be taken to College of Medicine.
Tributes
Meanwhile, soccer players, supporters and administrators have sent condolence messages to the bereaved family.
Civo Service United Captain Emmanuel Siyeni Zoya who played alongside late Chirambo at national duty described Chirambo as a charming and humble guy.
“I played with him , he was talented and humble man,” Zoya told Nyasa Times immediately after it was announced that the player is no more.
Silver Strikers defender Lameck Kachimanga could not hide his anger towards the soccer administrators in Malawi particularly Football Association of Malawi (FAM) for not helping Chirambo when he needed health care.
“You need us to work for you when we are fit but when we are sick, not even a single official pay us a visit. How much money would you have spent on him [Douglas] to go and get treatment guys??? You FAM, what’s your responsibility?? Am saddened by the death of Daga. Gone too soon Man. Shame..!” mourned Kachimanga through his Facbook page.
Bullets official Sankhani Mkandawire said at least K 2.5 million was required to fly Chirambo to either South Africa or India where he could have received a surgery.
Chirambo has been on and off since late last year but has died as he was being taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) from Thyolo, where he was staying with his uncle.
Meanwhile, burial arrangements for Chirambo are yet to be announced by the family.
Chirambo goes to the history of Bullets books as one of the longest serving members regarding the current squad.
May his soul rest in eternal peace!

It is sad to learn of the death of Douglas. But a point of correction. It is not the responsibility of FAM or government to look at the welfare of the player both current or those who have retired. Players are the responsibility of the club who employed them.
It’s high time players got organized for the future. As a player like any other employee the need to plan for such eventualities. The receive a salary and bonuses like everyone else. There is nothing special in a player because by playing football they are in an employment of some sort.
Way forward
Clubs need to pay the players well and players develop a saving culture. Insurance policies will be the way forward or even health policies.
Let our players get organize and form their own SACCO and most importantly value education and life styles needs to be looked into seriously. Engage Business Managers. (Ready to advise if contacted).
RIP Douglas.

I am sure of your shamelessness tha you will stand and express your sadness at the funeral. If u don’t improve the welfare of players prepare to put on soccer jerseys. what u know is enriching yourself at the expence of these poverty striken soccer stars. shame on u once again.

RIP brother Douglas. It’s time Malawian Football Administrators should do something about this issue. It’s not fair to leave the brother suffer without support in the hospital yet he entertained us all. Where is love in Malawian football? Maybe it’s time we do something we need solutions to these problems. Every body needs to do something. Let’s not loose our players again when we could have done something. Now wamwalira tikuwoneni mukuthamanga nditimabokosi tanu. We need policies at both national and club level to facilitate players financial support when they are in need. Mutati mufufuze he only needs less than 5million for his operation. FAM or SULOM could have organised a friendly game to raise funds or an sms promotion with both tnm and airtel to meet such cost. Mwinaso even ifeyo ma supporters tikadachitapo kanthu kuponya limodzi limodzi towards our brothers. Kafoteka, Maxwell Chirwa, coach Mpulula to mention a few are good examples of failure in supporting Malawian sportsmen when they are in need. It’s time now. We don’t want to point fingers at anyone mawa. We have enough let’s learn more and build our beautiful game….RIP DAGA we will greatly miss you.

RIP but let us not blame the admistrators only, the players are also to blame. once they receive their allowances they rush to Streo Club for beers and women instead of investing in something worthwhile. Just look at John Zilinde reduced to a barman selling satchets yet he used to be a star.

RIP Douglas. Your death should teach everyone in the football fraternity on the need to rethink issues of players contracts and salaries. It’s a shame that a top player like you couldn’t afford your own medical insurance and relied on the public health system.
