By-elections: MCP triumph in Mzuzu, UDF wins Mangochi and DPP gets Zomba, Thyolo

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has reclaimed seats in Luchenza in Thyolo and Zomba Central Wards in the Tuesday by-elections which also Malawi Congress Party (MCP) winning in Mzuzu and United Democratic Front (UDF) triumph in Mangochi.

Malawi Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to make formal announcement, but unofficial results which Nyasa Times has seen show that  UDF candidate for Mangochi Msikizi, Oliver Tayubu has won with 428 votes.

In Luchenza DPP’s Hendrex Alex Supuni has won. In Zomba, Elia Douglous of DPP also won.

In Mzuzu at Chibanja Ward, MCP candidate Charles Mlogera emerged victor with 486 votes.

Alliance for Democracy (Aford) candidate Gibson Chisale came second with 458 votes and DPP’s George Manda trailed third.

Much as it was generally regarded a “free and fair” undertaking, presiding officers of the three polling centres said “voter apathy was a concern.”

According to Dave Kumwenda of New Jerusalem polling centre, the turn was “abysmal.”

Over 6,000 voters were expected to cast their  for the six contestants battling it in Chibanja Ward including Gibson Chisale of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), Esmie Jere of Umozi Party-UP, Ulaya Kaunda of (MAFUNDE), Gorge Manda of the Democratic Progressive Party-DPP, Charles Mlogera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Mike Phiri (Independent).

The by-elections in Mzuzu followed the death of Charles Nyirongo of the Peoples Party (PP). In Zomba, it was to replace Mayor Juliana Ntaja who died.

The polls were taking place in five wards of Khwawa in Karonga, Chiwanja in Mzuzu, Msikisi in Mangochi, Luchenza in Thyolo and Zomba Central Ward, MEC officials have said.

    1. MCP has gained the vacant ward lost by PP in Mzuzu.
    2. UDF has retained their ward in Managochi
    3. DPP has gained the vacant ward lost by the Independent councilor in Zomba Central.
    4. DPP has retained their ward in Thyolo.
    5. DPP has gained the vacant ward lost by PP in Karonga.

    SUMMARY by Binomial equation:
    MCP+PP+AFORD+OTHERS=1
    DPP+UDF=4

  14. Literate people are not blinded by tribal or regional inclinations. Mzuzu with high literacy levels and Khawa in Karonga have examplified the benefits of education. You don’t have to vote in office some crazy maniac just because s/he belong to a political party of your tribe or region. If we all voted candidates on basis of competencies Malawi could have been on its way to prosperity. But this country is full of dunderheads who only think of plundering resources. There are too many medocres in strategic jobs who simply plunder resources and do nothing. The truth however is no society can develop under the auspices of mediocrity. All developed societies from time immemorial thrived under meritocracy. Our President being a scholarly professor should know this. It’s not how many tribesmen in my administration it’s how critical brains administration that will develop Malawi. If the criteria for job placement is tribe and region as is the case with our Cabinet we have another 300 years of poverty and underdevelopment. Trust me on this.

Tumbukas in Karonga think like goats, they go in streets complain about Quota system, they come and vote for quota specialist, they have been reduced to examination cheats at university on a president podium and they happily vote for their attackers, they cry that Northern region is not developed and they still vote for those that shun from developing their region.

    I will never understand northerners and i feel ashamed to be part of low thinkers like these, you have one meals at hospitals, your children have been denied opportunity to be selected to good secondary schools, yet you still vote for your oppressors? serious?? It really a pitty!

Councillor is chosen not on political but developmental concious if the party misses creteria its over.2ndly By-elections are difficult due to voter apathy,candidates have to work extra harder to victory plus +++++ I can foresee DPP wining 80% North,35% Centre and 100% South because blaming the past and present on someone will not help All of us let us know the future is going to blame us as well.   20. Based on these results, DPP will win again in 2019.
    UDF and DPP will sweep the South with no single vote for MCP.
    They will get some seats in Center as is the case now. Karonga seat having been won by DPP is a strong sign that the North will be divided and that DPP will scoop a good number of votes and seats.
    DPP will make MCP cry again mark my word!

  40. My DPP. Bravo my party. You have done it again.Matheically 3 out 5 means 60 percent. We have something worth maphwevuphwevu.Winning in Karonga the home of maphwevuphwevu its not a joke at all.Elections have been carried out in two regions and my party has voters for winning. Really this DPP party is a national party Anyway overall passing rate is as follow:

    DPP 60 percent( 3 out of 5)

    MCP 20 percent( 1 out of 5)

    UDF 20 percent (1 out of 5)

    AFORD 0 percent( 0 out of 5)

    Mafunde 0 percent ( 0 out of 5)

    Chakwera was already warned that if you want to rule Malawi then stop calling people from south by different names like baby seaters, sleepwalking etc. This is south my dear. You have scored o 0 out of 3 in south.

    For north we will keep sharing it. MCP 25 percent and DPP 25 percent in north. Problem with you Chakwera you dont do anything in south at all.Fighting MCP herer in south is the same Shasha Masamba fighting Mtimaukanena. What a shiet battle it can be. We know that fighting you in center is a tough going but it can rated as a fight between Osgood Kayuni and Shasha Masamba.

    Now DPP has decide to be scoping over 50 percent in case 50 + 1 is introduced.

  42. The results show that DPP has amasses 60%,mcp 20%, UDF 20%,pp 0%.Therefore, DPP + UDF = 60% + 20% = 80% mcp + pp= 20% + 0% = 0%. Is the results show the true reflection of 2019 polls if the four major parties form coalitions come 2019 ?

  43. When will MCP stop cerebrating lies? Last time I checked in May 2014, they cerebrated a victory that never was. They told the whole country that the won 76 MP’s hahahahaha. Yet the reality was that they got only less than 42 MP’s. The independent MP’s were in majority. Come to 2015 councilor by-elections, they are cerebrating for taking a single seat out of 5. They are building false hope for 2019 elections based on that single seat. They even don’t want to factor in the fact that in Karonga, they have thoroughly been beaten to the ground by the mighty DPP. How about in Zomba and Mangochi? Let’s not talk about Luchenza ward. Mmmmm with this false hope and complacency, now I think it is true that MCP will never rule Malawi again.

  89. The real winner here is MCP. They are making inroads in the North. Kwinako it was a given fact kuti alhomwe avoterana okhaokha. Nothing to celebrate here for DPP. Same for UDF in Mangochi, nothing to be excited about. Koma PP should start asking themselves the hard questions.
