Carjackers target Malawi’s capital city

After terrorizing Area 23 and surrounding areas in the capital city, car thieves have now changed focus to Area 49, where they are making away with electronic engine gadgets.

This week the thugs stole from vehicles in Area 49’s Dubai, after thuggery stints in Gulliver, Shire, 49 Proper, and New Lines.

Items being stolen, and moving into the Magalaja and other garage destinations in the city, Mchinji, Salima, Mponela and Dedza, include batteries, fuel injectors and lead cables and heads, computer boxes, among others. Radiators are also being stolen.

One Area 49 Dubai resident whose car has just been attacked this week at night, expressed worry that security was not up to it, and that the trend was a serious one in the city.

“We hope the police will do something about this,” he lamented.

Meanwhile residents have resolved that they will restrategise and strengthen the current community policing or neighbourhood group in order to apprehend and deal with the culprit in the absence of serious police assistance.

“We are going to apprehend and even kill these people because they will soon hurt or even kill innocent people for their property. These people are dangerous and we must meet them with the same measure. If the police cannot help, we shall surely hunt and kill these culprits,” he said.

The man further revealed to Nyasa Times that they have already identified a family that is keeping a habitual criminal who is alleged to have a revolver.

“We know the family and that they are hiding this thug. We shall soon attack the household and apprehend, even kill him. We will go all the way to even evict the family and if it comes to the worse also ‘hurt’ them physically. We are tired of people harboring thugs in this area,” he warned, refusing to have his name mentioned for security reasons.

The alleged family is run by a poor builder whose wife is on record to have seen the gun and expressed worry to her fellow women, who are all in turn afraid to be seen to have raised the alarm.

Police in Dubai are often seen to be docile, choosing bribes over exercise their rightful duties, threatening the peace and harmony of one of Area 49’s fast growing sub-area.

Due to rising criminal acts, people have resorted to metting justice to caught ‘culprits’, killing them instantly, which the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has warned against.

“Mob-justice is illegal and those found in the practice shall be met with the law,” warned the police a few months ago after several people fell victim, being killed by angry residents over alleged criminal acts.
