The soccer fraternity in the country can afford a smile and anticipate another great football season following the confirmation that the Carlsberg Cup competition is back this year.
The announcement was made at a joint news briefing the sponsors Carlsberg Malawi Limited held with Malawi FA officials in the
Commercial City of Blantyre on Tuesday.
The company was represented by its Group Marketing Manager Gwynyth Mchiela and Twikale Chirwa who is Brands Manager (Alcoholic Beverages).
According to the sponsors, the sponsorship package will remain at K40 Million with the champion pocketing K12 Million while the runners up will cut home K5 Million.
All the teams that will finish in the semifinals will receive K1 Million each while those that will be knocked out in the quarterfinals
stage will be compensated with K300,000.00 each.
In individual awards, the top goal scorer and Discovery of the tournament will take home K200,000.00 each.
The sponsors said they decided to come back because the competition is playing a big role in the development of football in the country by
among other things unearthing hidden talent since the competition accommodates teams from lower leagues who are easily spotted.
Speaking on behalf of the Malawi FA, Alfred Gunda who is the associations General Secretary hailed Carlsberg for the role it
continues to play in the development of sports in the country and football in particular.
Gunda said the decision to continue sponsoring the cup has come at a right time since his association is working round the clock to build a strong, good and youthful national team.
Mighty Be Forward Wanderers are the defending champions of the cup after beating Silver Strikers 5-4 in post match penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
They are also the only team to have defended the cup back to back after they won it again in 2015 after beating their traditional rivals
Nyasa Big Bullets 2-1.
