In the evening Carlsberg’s Chief Executive, Albel Chanje  launched the sponsorship package at Protea Ryalls Hotel.

He said Carlsberg Malawi Cup will be sponsored for a period of three years.

The sponsorship package includes K15 million each for Wanderers and Bullets making it K50 million in total.

Chanje said Carlsberg company is delighted to be back and sponsor local football but warned against acts of hooliganism.

“We say that we start sponsoring on condition that what caused the withdrawal of the then sponsorship wont reoccur. We want fair play and discipline in the game,” said Chanje.

He said Carlsberg Malawi expects a “win-win situation” to continue sponsoring, enticing the football fraternity to make the Carlsberg brand so popular.

Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu – standing-in for Sports Minister Enock Chihana who is in London for Olympic games – said government is thankful to Carlsberg, saying the sponsorship “will revive the legacy of the clubs, Nomads and Bullets and the cup will develop football in the country.”

According to Carlsberg Malawi’s group marketing manager Gwynyth Mchiela, the company’s vision is to commercialise football in the country.

Meanwhile, arch-rivals Bullets and Wanderers play at Kamuzu Stadium  this Saturday in the charity shield match to fight for K1 million.

From the K1 million (about $4 000), the winners of the Blantyre derby will get K500 000 (about $2 000) whereas K300 000 (about $1 200) will be donated to a charity cause of the winner’s choice.
