‘Cash for Work’ should commence immediately-JB

Malawi President Joyce Banda said she has directed that her administration’s ‘Cash for Work’ initiative immediately commences in order to help poor Malawians earn some money and be able to buy basic life necessities  particularly food in hunger-stricken areas.

The Head of State was speaking on Sunday in Monkey Bay in the resort district of Mangochi when she addressed a ‘Development Rally’.

“Many households in Malawi particularly in the rural areas are poor and hungry. We will not wait until October before we commence the ‘Work for Cash’ initiative. Our prompt intervention will be very important before people start dying from malnutrition,” President Banda told thousands of people that parked the Chikoko Bay mini stadium.

The President said she has also asked the relevant authorities to ensure that all ADMARC depots have adequate maize stocks so that people that do not have food can access maize easily.

Banda  then said when she ‘suddenly’ took over power three months ago, Malawi was in a very bad economic situation and that so far, there has been a lot of improvement.

“I have received a lot of praises from many observers the world over for helping improve the situation. I want to thank all Malawians for your valuable contribution to improving the status quo. This is a feat we’ve achieved collectively,” said the Head of State, noting the fuel and forex situations have positively improved and that the future looks good.
