Cashgate suspect Sympathy Chisale ‘ill’ for court, Lumumba Karima still at large

Businessman Limumba Karima, his co-accused Sympathy Chisale were again no show at Lilongwe City Council Civic Centre  where the High Court is hearing the K2.4 billion money laundering case in which former Ministry of Finance budget director Paul Mphwiyo is among the accused.

Legion of cashgate suspects

Lumumba and Chisale  have not been appearing  in court to face prosecution to counts of money laundering in which 18 civil servants and contractors are accused of defrauding government through theft and money laundering.

Lawyer Gift Khonyongwa told the court that his client, Chisale  is too ill to appear in court.

He showed the court medical records detailing the health condition of Chisale.

According to Khonyongwa, Chisale may appear in court Tuesday is he gets well.

Meanwhile, Karim remains at large since the case started progressing.

Pictures posted on social media, including Instagram, have shown Karim partying in South Africa in the company of musician Tay Grin.

Private practice lawyer Wapona Kita told the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mary Kachale before he stopped representing the suspect that Karim had been unwell and was in South Africa receiving medical attention.

However, Kita could not provide proof to that effect.

One picture sourced from Instagram dated January 8 2017 shows Karim holding a drink in his hand, standing near another musician named Rudebuoy Major and Tay Grin. The location on the post showed Taboo Night Club in Sandton.

Kachale asked  High Court judge Esme Chombo to issue an arrest warrant for the suspect.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera said they have not yet started discussing with International Police (Interpol) to help the local law enforcers in hunting Karim.

I don’t want to believe what I have been hearing that Limumba’s father is a DPP loyalist and that’s he is being spared from being hunted by Interpol. Of course I know Mr. Karim as a Chiradzulo boy
