Some Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima) are being suspected of murder which has triggered tension between students and villagers in Masikini T/A Likoswe in Chiradzulu, after a protracted battle resulted in the death of a villager, Dan Kachingwe, last Saturday.
Head of of Montfort Police Unit, Peter Chikwemba, explained that disagreement between students and the villagers started at a drinking joint located close to the university.
Chikwemba said when disagreement over beer became uncontrollable, the students left the pub heading to the university but met the villagers on the way where they fattally attacked the Kachingwe.
”It was at that point when the suspected three students severely injured one villager and killed another and swiftly rushed into the university campus,” said Chikwemba.
According to Chikwemba, the injured villager is still battling for his life at St Joseph Hospital in the district.
Chikwemba said investigations are underway to find out the third student involved in the murder.
He did not disclose the names of the suspected students, saying it may jeopardize their investigations which he said were at advanced stage.
Cunima Registrar, Nelson Chibvumbwe was non-committal on the matter.
Kachingwe, 36, a cross border businessman, hailed from Njobvu village, T/A Changatha in Thyolo and was buried in his home village.
