Chakwera blocked from giving eulogies at Mpasu’s funeral

The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has accused government of  blocking  the party president and leader of opposition Lazarus Chakwera from giving his eulogies at the funeral of  veteran politician Sam Mpasu, who was president of New Labour Party.

Mpasu,  who served Speaker of Parliament between 1999 and 2003, was found dead yesterday in his house in Mudi, Blantyre, after succumbing to hypertension complications.

He was laid to rest on Saturday in Ntcheu.

The initial program that was circulated at the funeral ceremony indicated that the leader of opposition would be among speakers to give their eulogies.

But Office of President and Cabinet circulated another programme which omitted Chakwera  from the list of people to give eulogies.

“Government deliberated sidelined Chakwera but he should have been given a chance  to pay tribute on behalf of all opposition parties,”  party’s deputy secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka said.

“The late Mpasu was working with fellow  opposition leaders as president of New Labour Party,” Mkaka said.

According to political analysts, Mpasu will be remembered as a politician who remained steadfast on a slippery political ground where his contemporaries slip more often than not.

Born in 1945, Mpasu was detained at Mikuyu Prison without trial from January 22 1975 to January 10 1977. In 1991 he joined UDF which at the time was an underground organisation, and fought Banda’s dictatorship. He was appointed to the National Referendum Committee.

In 1994, when United Democratic Front (UDF) became the first democratically elected government in the country, Mpasu was elected member of Parliament for Ntcheu Central.

He has served as minister of Education, Science and Technology (1994-95), minister of Health and Population (1995-1996), minister of Information (1997-1999) and minister of Commerce and Industry (2003-2004).

In 2008, he was convicted of corruption over Fieldyork International text book scam of 1994 and sentenced to six years imprisonment. He was released in August 2010 for good conduct.

He joined the New Labour Party in 2012 and became president of the party after Friday Jumbe resigned.

  1. Abale a kongilesi kukonda kusokoneza maliro a eni ake. Zomwe amafuna kuchita a Chakwera zandikumbutsa zomwe anachita a Tembo and anzao kumaliro a amfumu ena ku Lilongwe zaka za mbuyomu.
Nthawi yomwe malemu Mpasu anali MP komanso Speaker nkuti a Chakwera akugwetsa mpingo wa Assemblies of God ndi ulamuliro wao woipa zedi.
mkuluyu popeza ndiwolimbira kulankhula m’maliro tingomulola azilankhula m’maliro a azibusa. Komanso tikudabwa chifukwa chomwe mkuluyu sanapemphe kuti alankhule pa mwamboo wa maliro a Bishop Kanyama (mzimu wao uwutse ndi mtendere)?
Kodi Mkakayu akulankhula ngati ndani? is that not contempt of court that reinstated all the previous NEC members?

  2. Kodi eni mbumba ndiwomwe analamula kuti maliro ayikidwe ndi asilikari? Eni mbumbawo anali wokondwa kuti m’bale wawo waikidwa ndimwambo wa boma. The VP was enough to speak on behalf of Malawians. Chilima was not speaking as a DPP member but on behalf of the First Man on the land of Malawi. Chakwera would have spoken on behalf of Mpasu if he died as an MP. But still it was the Speaker to speak on such a funeral not Chakwera. Let him stick himself to party issues. He is not GOVT but this funeral was in the hands of govt. He would have been crying like this if he was denied to speak on Gwanda’s funeral because he was once the leader of the party. But considering how they tortured him even in the multiparty era Chakwera was not supposed to speak on Mbuya’s funeral. Gwanda did not leave the MCP willingly. Mr Chakwera should just be waiting to speak on funerals of MCP members. Wosamadzikakamiza zinazi.
Kodi MCP chifukwa chiyani yakhala ikulephera zisankho zisanu zapitazi? Kodi ndiye kuti a Malawi akuyiumirabe mtima kuti isadzalowe m’boma? MCP leaders end up being leaders of opposition. This is the last post they can serve according to Malawians’ thinking. How can the party handle govt issues if it fails to handle a party which is confined to one region? Kulilira maliro zoona?

  3. Mudziwe kuti pa Maliro mphavu zimakhala ndi eni mhumba kapena mtundu kupanga madongosolo. Koma poti dzikoli tinapeleka kwa athakati oti chilichonse amayikapo ndale thats why zimakhala choncho. Dziko likufunika anthu odziwa miyambo ya makolo. Pano aliyense otukwana ndi kunyoza aMalawi akupatsidwa mpando kuphatikizapo mafumu. Koma zachisoni dzanja lalemba. Ngati munthuyu Mulungu akumusunga ndi moyo akufuna azaone kugwa kwake, koma akanakhala kuti anakawina ihhgg atamwalira kale. Bingu passed own coz kunakabwera zisankho akanawinanso.

  4. Likhora you really have an ugly heart and you sound savagery. Mpasu was a president of his own party and belonged to opposition because that’s what he chose. Chakwera represents opposition in and outside parliament and therefore fit to speak on this particular function. What was government doing at the funeral of an opposition figure. Stupid minds and myopic people like you should use brains to think not your sick urine cool

    1. Wanyauyo anakubandulani 6-0 bwanji inu a DPP after wasting Govt resources kuti mwina kapena nkupezako olo mpando umodzi? Watch your mouth guys and tikumana mu 2019 momwemu umu pa ground lomwe mwagwa nalo lija mukhaula…… Kkkkkkk

  5. Speaker of national assembly was enough because the funeral was under government and precisely for Parliament.

  6. This is the reason why mcp will never rule malawi again ,always crying for sympathy vote ,mumafuna kuti muyankhule ngati Mpaso anali wa Mcp? kapena mukufuna mavoti a ku Ntheu ,if that is the case go and hold a rally mukawawuze anthu nkhawa zanu ,ngati akakumvereni .

    1. Sizikugwirizana . Kungoti DPP is a primitive. This can only be done by poor country like Malawi. This was not a political party function. Umbuli ndiye umenewu.

Fortunately, u are giving Chakwera popularity.

An Eagle does not fight an ordinary bird….Chakwera is like an eagle.

  7. That was great. Remember it’s Mcp that put him in jail without trial. He suffered in Jail .His death was contributed by the crocodile party. Who is Chakwera after all. Suti yogula pakaunjika
    To hello Chakwera

  8. Ka suit ka china ng’amba ng’amba aziyankhula kuti chiani? Kodi why hero worship Mr loud mouth? Panali Chilima pamenepo basi anakwana. Za kuntcheutu izi. Dikila maliro a area governor wanu wa MCP mukayankhule za magetsi ndi cholera.
Munthu wosadziwa perfume nthukuta thooo aziti fwee fwee fwee . Asaaaa.

    1. Cadet akatero kumtima mbeee. This is why DPP is loosing popularity especially in Blantyre and and other districts in the south. Ndale zonyozana ndizauchikape ndipo ndizomwe aMalawi atopa nazo.

    1. Bwana Malembo Folo let us reason a bit. Why does your Chakwera rush to be unnecessarily recognized in funerals? Who told you that Chakwera is the Leader of opposition both in Parliament and out side Parliament? If he is the leader of opposition outside parliament, which forum elected him to that position? If Mpasu was an MP then your arguments are plausible, other wise they show how shallow minded you are bent to oppose anything. Remember one day MCP will govern and would not wish such kind of nonsense as you are doing today

  9. Misguided VP Saulos got a lot to learn as a politician hence the whole term in office sidelined by Dpp & his future is very uncertain in the party. If i were him could apply discernment how i treat Chakwera who’s gaining daily inspite of opposition. Saulos cosmetic relationship with APM will continue to deteriorate since he is a big threat to them.

    1. Malawians cannot be represented by Dr Lazarus Chakwera unless empowered by APM. VP was there and no for opposition leader to say anything. After all, we appreciate his presence at the funeral. Our VP represented APM and Malawians inclusive.

    2. Ndale za ku malawi we in 2018 not 64 akanayankhula chakwerayo ndie kuti wawina kale chisankho ? Kodi mpasu anali mu boma mesa mesaanali wa opposition , ndale za chimidzi zakalekale

  10. DPP always behaves as if we’re not in multiparty era, barbaric and savagery, Mpaso was not a member of DPP, why kuchita zinthu motsutsana ndi eni ake maliro?

  11. I am not surprised by the fact that Dr. Chakwera is always victimized during such funerals. The thing is When Dr. Chakwera speaks DPP is always shaken down to it’s foundation. So the best way DPP cadres employ is to silence him. But nay this does not change anything in the minds of Malawians since we have all agreed to remove this brutal party from power come 2019. They are living in the dark ages. It is a joke to imagine their leader lived in USA, a country known for mature democracy, for over 40 years and yet he learnt nothing about how meaningful democracy functions. Shame to DPP, Shame to Mr. Ibu.

    1. I do not see or understand what you the so-called Peter and your comrades are saying. Whether in gafument ot in opposition, we are all in Malawi Government. Sindikuonapo bvuto apa. Sindaletu izi, awa anali maliro. Ndichifukwa chake malemu Bvumbwe (TA), Thyolo anakuthirani mphepo pa maliro a Joseph Manyungwa anthu osamva inu!! Let politics be politics and maliro be maliro. Musiyeni mbale wathu apumule mu ntendere. do not seek political gains on Impi Sam Mpasu, Biyeni.

  12. Blocking Chakwera will not yield anything as he is God chosen leader 2019 to transform Malawi. This is typical dpp full of fears of Chakwera that is why now Chakwera is every where in the mouth of Muthalika being mentioned 100 times on political podiums and 5 different programs at MBC being aired out against Chakwera meaning tremble in dpp as Chakwera becomes victorious day by day.

    1. DPP/MBC are doing commendable job by promoting and publicizing MCP/Chakwera to Malawians, keep it up guys. Tisaiwale kuti MCP/Chakwera alibe chowayankhulira, tidalira inu a DPP/MBC

      1. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk – Those that will vote for DPP or MCP are not on this forum. They even do not know what you are talking about. Continue cheating Chakwera and make him more disappointed come 2019 polls.

Ask JZU – he will tell you more about Malawian voting trends.

        1. kkkkkkkkk mgoloso you have spoken my mind these people they think those who vote are only the learned and educated fellas who are able to criticize whatever DPP is doing, people in rural areas their memories are still fresh about the atrocities that were committed by MCP…. voting in Malawi does not follow the thinking of the elite and educated minds even Chilima himself knows this that’s why he is still clinging to DPP.

          1. Unfortunately many MCP stooges think DPP will be an underdog in 2019 polls. That’s how myopic they are. They don’t know that over 80% of voters leave in rural areas and what they hear most is about DPP’s development, food availability etcetc.

          2. Those atrociues you are talking about were committed by those who left MCP so many years ago. These people are now holding senior positions in DPP, hence the death of Robert Chasowa, Mr Issa Njaunju and others too numerous to mention.

          3. These DPP imbeciles are behaving as if they will be in government forever. Zinthu muzazisiya izi. Malawi belongs to all of us.

        2. Ukunamatu iwe. You are one of those people who are cheating themselves that Chakwera will not win. You will be disappointed the way you were disappointed on 17th October, 2017 when MCP won seats in Ndirande and Nsanje. A Malawi adapenya panopa.

    2. Abale Mulungu yekhayo tazimusiyani akhale Mulungu. God chosen God chosen who told you? Inu mwaiwala kuti Abiti Ntila amati Mulungutu wasankha ine? Please stop twisting God’s hands please!
