Chakwera registers to vote and run as MP in Lilongwe North West

Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Rev. Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has registered in Lilongwe North West constituency to participate in the forthcoming tripartite elections in 2014.

Chakwera registered at Malembo Primary School in traditional authority Khongoni on Sunday where he said he will also contest for the parliamentary seat of the constituency.

He will also contest as presidential candidate for the party.

“Just like any aspiring Member of Parliament, I will go through primary elections. MCP will hold primary elections in all the constituencies in the country regardless of whether there is a sitting MCP MP or not,” he said as he briefed reporters soon after the registration.

The party said last week in a statement that conducting primary elections in all the constituencies was in line with resolutions made by the Party’s NEC and in accordance with provisions of the party’s constitution.

The statement said the primary elections would be held from the second week of November 2013.

Other candidates that have already registered include James Nyondo of National Salvation Front, President Joyce Banda of the Peoples Party, Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party, Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front.
