Chakwera says relationship with Chilima will not be complicated

President Lazarus Chakwera has said his relationship with his deputy Saulos Chilima will not at any point be complicate, saying their main agenda is to reconstruct the country.

President Chakwera and Vice-President Chilima: No worries of complicated relationship

Chakwera’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leads the nine-party Tonse Alliance  led government while Chilima leads the UTM party the largest partner of the alliance.

Chilima is on record  has having hinted that the presidency of Tonse Alliance would be rotational among partner parties.

But Chakwera,  in an interview in Tiuzeni Zoona talk show on privately-owned Zodiak Broadcasting Station , said the candidacy in the next elections would be tackled “when we get to that bridge.”

He said the focus now should be how the country can clear the rubble left by past regimes.

Politician-cum-commentator Humphrey Mvula said it would be too early and a distraction to start speculating about whether Chakwera will be the presidential torchbearer again in the next elections or what will be next move for Chilima.

  1. Wait and see
And we are watching very closely
Matches and wood is there only spark to bring down your alliance.

  2. Their alliance looks more organized. Am sure they have already agreed on such issues. It was very critical to talk and agree about it. However, the problem would arise if either of them diverts from that agreement. It should be in black and white, definitely. Malawians will still be able then to know who is who. Simple. Some disgruntled people will try by all means to saw hatred between these people. Remember how together these people braved the embarrassment of sitting on the bench outside our courts. Together. Am sure they deeply and soberly talked about this president issue. If they didn’t then this fight is coming very soon or later.

  3. Bwana musayambepo kunjanja njanja apa. It’s not too early though, mukanangoyankha zomwe zili mumgwirizano muja. I see no tolerance in next coming election year.

  4. The relationship btwn President Chakwera and his Vice Dr Chilima holds the tonse alliance. Any friction btwn the two can prove to be futile. It is my prayer that the two remain remain royal to the pact conditions for Malawians to trust them beyond. Malawi the warm heart of Africa 🌍. God bless.

  5. Bwana Chakwera. Already signs are for all to see that the relationship is very complicated. And the by-election in Benghazi will open up the wounds for all of us to see. As will the other by-elections which will see PP loosing top leaders. Wait and see.

  6. Even before the signing of the coalition btwn MCP and UTM people had to talk according to what they were thinking, so today . Even chilima was asked who was going to be the torch bearer of the tonse alliance? His response was whether it be me or chakwera believe in us . The same as this they knows what is going to happen after this five years term. Why rushing things journalists

  7. The Tiuzeni zoona program on Zodiak Radio Station, if am not wrong is done by Daniel Mababa, and mostly it is done through a phone call.
I have been following this program when I was home in Malawi and here as well using online listening, this program is none other trash to the people who has the truth. Because the program requests the truth but it doesn’t have timing.
I’m saying this because it looks like the program that needs those who are frustrated with circumstances not those who have plans in life more over to the President who have just took power from disgruntled leadership with corruption, that is lucky of timing, I just want to believe that this time, we would all have one voice and that voice should be the one called One Malawi one Nation building together with one vision. Mr Daniel Mababa, I don’t have your email address, I think you need to change your approach especially when things seems to be easy, because that is where we miss and or start questioning the dignity of the leadership because of timing. Chakwera is not frustrated, he has a lot to do on his table please! Go to Peter Mutharika and or many of those frustrated Ministers! Tiuzeni zoona may benefit your family and can bring food on your table, but there 17 plus Million people out there expecting promises from Chakwera and Chilima, now here you are with yoir panga to destroy their relationship in the name of Tiuzeni zoona? How is going to be Tiuzeni zoona if you have asked the person like the way you have done to Dr Chakwera just less than 100days in the Office about the next election? Definitely even Chakwera has said the truth, but because of your timing, it will be taken like it is not true, you see how stupid you are Mr Daniel Phiri Mababa? Now Chichewa chonveka bwino nachi,, musamutengele ku mtoso Chakwera chifukwa akuoneka womasuka kwa a Malawi. Zithe zimenezi! Let’s respect the President not fear him. Dont be like you own the whole entire Zodiak, stop this nonsense! Let everyone get healed from the past and start building our country not through bring division among the leadership! Ndinu okhumudwitsa kwabasi Mr Daniel Phiri Mababa. People spend their time crying and praying to have this umodzi between Chakwera and Chilima so that we should go out from DPP Government, and here you are bringing this division amongst the same people so that they should be kicking each mentally? Unvundula madzi umenewo Mr Daniel Mababa, you will reap and I repeat you will reap!

    1. Wawa, koma ndiye kukwiya komeneko? See, Journalism in this country is based on thinking not reasoning! What is happening in this country is that, we don’t see the change but other countries are managing to see and they are asking themselves if they can be able to be like Malawians. Now here we are some one bringing useless division in the name of Tiuzeni zoona!afuna aliyese aziganiza ngati mmene iyo amaganizira.

    2. The problem is the President instead of working in the office trying to sort out a horde of problems dogging this country. He is busy going on a private radio to do a PR stunt. He is no longer in the opposition now. Tell him to find something better to do with his time. The problem is that he has never done any dirty work in the offices like his friend Chilima. This is time for working rather than running around doing media briefings for nothing. Let’s see if he is capable of working by finding solutions to problems of this country. This is the job that he has been given by the Malawian people. Ma Adviser ambirimbiri aja they can’t tell him what he is supposed to focus on now. Pamene ithere 5 years we are more likely to have another Peter Mutharika with just a different name, who is clueless on what he is supposed to focus on.

        1. Are you joking or what. He should have said I am busy. I do not have time for that. It just shows that he has too much time in his hands which he does not know what to do with. Did he address any pertinent issue concerning this nation during the interview if you say there was a need for him to do that. He is talking too much. He should just shut up and do his job.

        2. You must be joking right. He could have said no. The problem is that he talks too much and has a lot of time in his hands. He should focus on resolving the problems of this country.

    3. That is what Mutharika’s supporters used to say in regard to Chilima. By the time they realised they had tamed a vicious snake, it was too late. If Chakwera does not address this issue from the beginning, you will see what is going to happen. Chilima is called a vicious snake for a good reason. Burying your head in the sand will not resolve this existential issue.

    4. Nobody is forced to listen to the programme even you Kaitano. People do it at their own choice. By the way tiyeni tidzingolemba mu chichewa mmalo molemba chingerezi chothyoka. Mulekeni Daniel agwire ntchito yake ya utolankhani. Kaya ndinu a Young Pioneer Bola mungokhala chete because you are writing trash, idiot.

  8. Just shows you that the president does not make decisions based on principle but rather than based on the circumstances which is why he is always flip flopping from one goal post to the other. His party’s constitution says that you can only be party president for 2 five year terms. Here he is talking about the people who will bend the constitution to suit his ambitions. Chilima is just an employee for the president to fulfill his desires nothing else.

      1. Can you tell us your informed position. You seem to know more than me. Even if the constitution says he can stand again. He should have stated it openly that he is going to stand again. The problem of playing hide and seek with other people’s lives. He thinks that because Chilima managed to humble himself for the sake of this country then he is stupid to the extent that he can stand again without consideration for his sacrifices. This is the same culture we see even in offices people think that because you give others a chance then you are foolish that you will not have your own chance in life.

      2. Tell us your informed position. You seem to be know. Even if the constitution allows him to stand again in 2024. He should have come out clear that he is or isn’t going to stand. What is wrong with that. The problem is that he prefers to take positions based on circumstances. And he thinks that because Chilima allowed him to lead the coalition for the sake of this country he is stupid and does not deserve the position himself. This is what happens even in offices people think that because you humble enough to let others be in front of you it means that you are stupid and does not deserve to be in that position which is very poor thinking based on narrow personal interest rather than looking at the bigger picture where at the end of the day is about serving Malawians and the greater good for the society in general. The problem is that people think that you are weak-minded which is a very myopic view and has led to failure of team work and working for greater national common interest. Leaders should learn to be transparent and honest enough to make their positions known without beating about the bush and playing hide and seek with other people’s lives.

      3. Some one is blocking my response. That is what democracy is about. Freedom of speech. You are trying to block my views.

  9. Mmera mpoyamba guys. Nyumba ndi foundation nde ngati mkuti mudikire mkazakhoma malata nde ikazagwa nde ndi ntchito yabwino?

  10. How nice to hear of an “uncomplicated” partnership at the top! No Malawian president, since Independence, has been able to work with a vice-president or senior colleague and Malawian politics has been plagued by decades of mutual suspicion and presidential hubris. I would place the blame firmly on the shoulders of the Muluzi-Mutharika old-UDF faction which has dominated politics for so long recently, but Hastings Banda’s MCP dictatorship must also be blamed for Malawi’s presidential hubris and paranoia.
Chakwera and Chilima promise a new sort of politics and I, for one, am prepared to give them a chance to deliver!

  11. If the agenda is to reconstruct the country. The future presidency agenda should take a back seat until immediate issues are dealt with. So many issues to deal with now

  12. there is no sewing hatred seeds. the president uttered these unfortunate words; whether deliberate or cornered only God knows. I am tempted to equate Chakwera and Joyce Banda. Chakwera is doing exactly what Joyce Banda did when she assumed this high office. talking too much and doing very little. or focusing on less important things. My appeal is; Mr president; leave Chilima alone; he is busy thinking and working with a vision. Mr President; continue your PR.

  13. Looks like someone has pocketed some money to fabricate “complications” in month number 2 of a 5 year term. Trying to sow seeds of division!

5 years is a long time my dear “journalists”, mutopa.

    1. ITS LIKELY THAT COME 2025 MCP WILL WIN LESS THAN 30 SEATS OF MPS WHILE UTM WILL GET MORE THAN 50 SEATS OF MPS WINNING THE WHOLE NORTH AND SOME IN CENTRAL REGION CHILIMA NDI MFANA OGANIZA BHO KNOWING SOUTHERN IS STRONG FOR UDF AND DPP HE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF TONSE ALLIANCE TO DISLODGE MCP FROM ITS STRONGHOLD OF NORTH AND CENTRE WITHIN GOVERNMENT .

    2. @BigMan
Real democrats clear speculations as early as possible. Chilima has exhausted his maximum two terms limit so his UTM supporters are anxiously waiting for his next move. Mahatir Muhammad and Nelson Mandela clearly stated their positions on whether they will finish their terms or vie for the second term as earlier as their first day in office so why is Chakwera playing hide and seek?
Chilima did not hide anything, he said it at more than 3 occasions that he will lead Tonse alliance in “next presidential election” and he has up to date not given any clarification on that issue meaning he stand by what he said. I even wonder why journalist are shy to seek clarification from him.
Pretending that in MCP all is well as regards to what Chilima said is doing the ostrich policy (burying ones head in the sand not to see the lurking danger) its pure foolishness.
Tell your MCP supporters the truth that you are a 1 term president. SKC amaganiza bo heavy you will be chackmated very soon. Njoka saweta!

      1. They are not anxiously waiting for any next move, they are actually happily following the current governing process in order to see these two gentlemen deliver good for the Malawi nation. Lets wait for 2024 to start getting excited, if we survive covid19.

    3. You can say that again, and the this is the second article on Nyasatimes saying the same thing in different ways! Aha I can see the work of the enemies of change here! Let the guy Chakwera and Chilima deal with the corruption issue, which are mega problems of Malawi that has caused it to stuck like the way it is! A Daniel Mababa, muzisiya za ukazitape mukuchitazo! Can we please if possible have a peaceful country! Yes yes yes yes yes yes! This is too early oh oh oh oh oh oh! Just join your opposition and debate if you want.

    4. I noted this and it was stupid of a whole thinking journalist asking such a petty question, 2 months into office and then asking if he will stand again or who will stand on Tonse, very shameful journalism
