Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera accompanied by UTM leader Saulos Chilima as his running mate to present the nomination papers at Sunbird Mount Soche is set for fresh presidential elections and resigned from his position as member of Parliament for Lilongwe North West Constituency.
Assistant clerk of Parliament Leonard Mengezi said Chakwera resigned on Monday.
Chakwera was lined up to be the first of all the nine presidential candidates to submit presidential nomination papers today, from 9am.
On February 3 2020, a five-judge panel of the High Court of Malawi sitting as the Constitutional Court nullified Mutharika’s May 21 2019 victory in the first case where results of a presidential election were subjected to a full trial.
Later in the day, Shaibu Mustaffa, from New Vision for Democracy will follow.
Then in it will be the turn of Peter Kuwani of the Mbakuwaku Movement before independents Ras David Chikomeni Chirwa and Hadwick Kaliya wrap up the opening day.
On the last day, in the morning independents Khwechani Wesuze Nkhoma, Phunziro Mvula and Smart Swira will submit their papers in that order.
