Chakwera visits Area 18, says residents should get psychological support after sewege horror

Leader of opposition and president of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Lazarous Chakwera on Wednesday  visited Area 18 residential estate and said the residents needs physcholical support after from the compensation they are demanding from Lilongwe Water Board and Lilongwe City Council (LCC)   as they were made to consume water contaminated with sewage.

Chakwera being briefed on his tour to Area 18

Some residents of Area 18 had sewage-filled water flowing from their taps, a development which was later confirmed and regretted by Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) chief executive officer (CEO) Alfonso Chikuni .

Chakwer said he believes the affected residents need to be talked to by apsychologist over the sewage horror.

” Some of these problems do not only affect our physical beings, but also our psychological being, hence , the need to engage a psychologist to talks to these affected people,”said Chakwera.

“Some of us have knowledge of such psychologists so we may consider doing something about it privately,” he added.

According to Leonard Phiri, one of the residents who spoke to Chakwera, other people are still having problems such as diarrohea.

The residents through their lawayers wants service providers LWB and LCC  to offer monetary  compensation and  to immediately provide relief and potable water to the affected residents, permanently rectify the water situation, immediately conduct a wide invetsigative audit of the whole LCC water and sewer areas.

They also demand that they should rehabilitate all broken sewer pipes.

Following the incident, Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) held a public inquiry in Lilongwe to get the views of different stakeholders including Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), LWB, Lilongwe City Council (LCC) and the affected residents.

The LWB CEO attributed the existence of worn out and rusty water pipes , saying LWB is working on replacing the old pipes some of them which are over 50 years old.

Chakwera’s visit was as useless as his idea to engage psychologists because he took no solution to Area 18 apart from him attempting to gain political mileage. After all, the residents have already taken the right cause of action to seek compensation. Do not cause further trumours to them by your political visits and utterances while presenting emptiness of tangible or permanent solutions to the area like total overhaul of the sewer and water systems. No need for empty talk.

Chakwera went to appreciate the problems. Then, tells the residents to take up those in authority till all those problems are over. So what is his roles? I thought he is also an authority? Awa sangatithandize basi, osazawavotera
