Chakwera wants more funding to Malawi universities

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr Lazarous Chakwera has called for more funding in public universities and an increase for education facilities.

Speaking Thursday during a public lecture at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Bunda Campus, Chakwera said it is very pathetic to see that the universities have the same infrastructures which were built many years ago under founding president Kamuzu Banda and yet the intake has almost doubled.

“It is very pathetic that those we deem to be acquiring the top most education should be learning in tents. There are no funds for the students to be doing their own research, and even learning equipment does not tally with the number of students, this is bad.

“What we need is to invest more into university education, we want the graduates who should not only look for employment but should employ others as well,” he said.

Chakwera: MCP president values education

Chakwera said it is high time Malawi should have the leadership that will make sure that many youths who have passed the secondary education should attend higher quality learning by constructing more universities and expanding those that are operational.

Speaking at the same forum, MCP Public Relations Officer Jessie Kabwira said the only candidate who can turn around things in universities between the top four contenders for the 2014 elections is Chakwera.

“Of all the major four candidates, it is only Chakwera who went through the University of Malawi system and he is well conversant with everything happening there. He know what should be done to bring back the glory at the universities than the rest, so it’s up to us to put him into power for the change,” she said.
