Chanco elects new union leaders: Chiziwa replaces Madise as president

The Chancellor College Academic Staff Union (CCASU) has elected  new  leaders with Dr Symon Chiziwa who was secretary being ushered into the top leadership  role replacing  one of Malawi’s renowned trade unionists and industrial relations experts Sunduzwayo  Madise.

Madise a law lecturer and Deputy Head of Department of Practical Legal Studies at Chanco is on scholarship to pursue further studies in Britain.

He took over from Dr Jessie Kabwila, the Iron Lady who is now spokeswoman of opposition Malawi Congress Party.

Kabwila  made news across the world in 2011 when she stood firm and fervently battled the former regime of late President Bingu wa Mutharika in defending the lectures’ academic freedom.

The DPP regime shut down Chancellor College (CHANCO) for close to a year while students at the Polytechnic spent about four months without learning after a protracted war over the academic freedom issue.

Chancellor and the Polytechnic are two largest constituent colleges of University of Malawi and the battle started after the then Malawi Police Chief Peter Mukhito summoned  political science lecturer Dr Blessings Chinsinga for interrogation over an example he gave in his public policy class.

In the new CCASU  line-up, Dr Mangani Katundu was elected vice president.

The new CCASU Secretary General is Dickson Mazibuko and will be deputised by Dr Chimwemwe Mhango while treasure is Dr Richard Nyirongo deputised by Dr Emmanuel Ngwira.

Committee Members are Frank Mtemang’ombe, Dr Elizabeth Kamchedzera,  Dr Damazio Mfune Mwanjakwa and Esmie Kadzamira.
