Chaponda threatens to reveal parties causing ‘DPP’ violence

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) head of research and treasurer general Dr. George Chaponda has told Tiuzeni Zoona, a hot pitched program on Zodiak Broadcasting Stattion (ZBS) that other political parties are causing violence in the country wearing DPP regalia.

Chaponda challenged that he is going to reveal the names of political party leaders and their parties to shame them, but quickly refused when prompted by host, Pilirani Phiri, to do so.

“I can reveal the names if you want,” he challenged, then tracked back saying: “I cannot do that right now but will do so later. I will even show you where they are printing DPP T-shirts and other regalia which they use to cause havoc in order to discredit the party.”

Political scientist Dr Henry Chingaipe condemned the conduct of DPP supporters  when news broke that their leaders had been arrested, saying:  “Police should not fail to do their job because someone has constituents that will react in a violent way.”

The former cabinet minister in various portfolios under the DPP, Chaponda also said his party would field the party leaders that are currently facing treason case should they be elected at the convention come 17 to 19 April 2013.

“I have told you that our laws say you are innocent until proved guilty. These people have not been found guilty,” he said.

“ As in Kenya with Uhuru Kenyatta who has won the presidency despite being wanted by the International Court for allegedly killing people, we are also sure that until proven guilty, our leaders will contest,” he explained.

He also added that there are a number of treason cases some of which are still in court today and nothing would stop the DPP treason suspects from contesting.

Chaponda also said he himself will be contesting for the position of the party’s Treasurer General.

He also vehemently cast aside allegations that he once said he would contest for presidency, when in fact the party elected Peter Mutharika for the position, according to the party constitution led by the National Governing Council (NGC).

“At the convention we shall not just be going to confirm Mutharika’s position and all positions will be open, meaning some will contest for the position. As for me I do not know who will be contesting for that top position so ask convention chairperson Nicholas Dausi for details. That is not my job,” he said.

The DPP parliamentary leader also said he was not aware if Henry Chimunthu-Banda, who is also the current Speaker of the National Assembly, will truly be contesting for party presidency.

He said at the demise of president Bingu wa Mutharika the party National Governing Council chose Peter Mutharika to take over, and that did not mean that Peter was imposed.

Chaponda also said it is up for Malawians to decided which is the lesser of the two evils, one under treason case and one messing up things, meaning President Joyce Banda.
