Charges for Police officer’s wife: Tortures boy, 10

A 24 year old woman, married to a police officer is this Friday expected to appear before the Mzimba first grade magistrate court to answers charges for torturing and handcuffing a 10 year old boy she was staying with.

The woman, Olivia Salimu Chimwala is married to Pride Chimwala, a police officer based at Mzimba police station.

Speaking in an interview with Nyasa Times on Wednesday, Mzimba police station child protection officer Cliff Dzoole said the woman, used a leather belt in whipping and torturing the boy before handcuffing him.

Dzoole said the woman who works as a health surveillance assistant at Mzimba district hospital stays with the boy, who is a son to her husband’s sister.

Her husband is currently in Zomba studying at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi.

Dzoole said the woman attacked the boy when she found her to have been an absentee at school.

He said the neighbours heard the boy crying bitterly and when they had come to check on the boy they discovered that he was severely beaten and in handcuffs. The boy was taken to Mzimba district hospital for treatment.

According to the child protection officer, police opened a file against the woman and she will go to court on Friday to answer charge of causing grievous bodily harm.
