Drama in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), the major opposition block in the country, continues when opposers of the party’s president Lazarus Chakwera, failed to vacate an injunction obtained by Chakwera on Saturday so that they could hold an emergency convention.
The anti-Chakwera faction—led by Chatinkha Chidzanja Nkhoma, a former close aide of Chakwera who fell out with the party leader just after the 2014 elections—attempted to vacate the injuction on Saturday but could not succceed.
Chidzanja-Nkhoma insists on the call for a convention as she accuses Chakwera of mismanaging affairs of the party, including breaking its constitution.
In an affidavit dated June 9 2019 by MCP president Lazarous Chakwera filled in support of the application for the injunction, he argues that those interested with a convention were supposed to formally put across to the party’s NEC the request for an emergency convention.
Chakwera said the emergency convention is “wrongful”
