Chavula named Flames skipper: Malawian Airlines sponsor tickets

Defender Moses Chavula has been named as the new captain of the Malawi football team, the Flames.

The announcement was made by head coach Young Chimodzi during a news conference the technical panel held at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Chimodzi said the Mozambique-based left-back will be deputised by Lucky Malata.

“I’m convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains Malawi has ever had,” said the Flames mentor.

Chimodzi said in choosing the captain, they considered factors like seniority, conduct, ability, tactical awareness and influence.

Chavula begins his reign as captain in Chimodzi’s first match in charge, a friendly against Zimbabwe on Wednesday.

The skipper told Nyasa Times that he was delighted with the appointment, calling it an “honour”.

”I am very proud to be given this honour,” he said. “I will not let the country down.”

Meanwhile, Malawian Airlines has sponsored five return tickets to Johannesburg for the Flames ahead of Wednesday’s international friendly match against the Warriors of Zimbabwe.

According to the airline’s marketing officer Mike Ndaombwa, the cost of the tickets is in excess of K1 million (about $2 500).

The tickets will help ferry Robert Ng’ambi, Harry Nyirenda, Atusaye Nyondo, Gabadinho Mhango and Joseph Kamwendo for the match.
