Chief in Ntcheu, 3 men arrested for medical drugs theft

Malawi police have arrested village Headman Ngayaye, whose real name is Matthews Golowa, 46, of Ngayaye village T/A Njolomole in Ntcheu district for being found in possession of medical drugs.

According to Ntcheu police spokesperson, Gift Matewere, chief Ngayaye has been arrested together with three accomplices, Cosmas Chinungu 33, of Magola village T/A Njolomole, a ground labour at Mphepozinai Health Centre, Mcdonald Msichiri, a healthy Surveillance Assistant at the hospital and Wendulo Kadzamira, 26, of Chimongo village T/A Chiwere in Dowa, a hospital attendant at Champiti health Centre.

“We received a tip from well-wishers that the village Headman Ngayaye was selling medical drugs, and in a follow up to that tip, we went to his house where we found assorted medical drugs and medical equipments,” said Matewere.

Police spokesperson said after interviewing him,the village Headman revealed that he was being supplied by three other suspects who were also later arrested.

Among the recovered drugs are amoxyline, assorted high blood pressure drugs, family planning pills and depos and medical equipments such as Malaria testing kit and injection syringes, just to mention a few.

The drugs and the equipment are worthy over 1 million Kwacha, Matewere said.

The suspects have since been charged with offences of found in possession of medical drugs of Dangerous Drug Act and Theft by public servant for those health workers and they will appear in court soon.
