Chigamula spoils football teams from Area 49

Lilongwe based business magnet Lefnos Chigamula once more extended his helping hand towards sports development, when he bankrolled a K300,000 soccer bonanza for teams in Area 49’s Maria Ward.

The two-day bonanza, which took place at Kalonga Primary School ground attracted six teams- Gulliver United, Gulliver FC, Hodic Academy, Baghdad United, Shire United and Eleven Bongos. Bongos were eventually disqualified from the tournament for displaying for unsporting behaviour.

After two days of action, Gulliver United emerged champions after beating Gulliver FC 8-7 in post-match penalties as the two sides tied at 3-3 in regulation time.

As champions, Gulliver United got K100,000 and a trophy with the runners-up pocketing K50,000. Third-placed Shire received K25,000.

Apart from the cash prizes, Chigamula also presented a ball to each of the participating teams.

Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony at Kalonga Primary over the weekend, Chigamula said he accepted to sponsor the bonanza after observing that youths from the area had little to do during their free time.

The business man announced he would adopt the winning team- Gulliver United and asked the team to provide him with a list of the team’s needs and draw a programme of its activities: “From now on, this is going to be my team and will be representing the constituency in football related activities,” declared Chigamula, amid wild cheering from the team’s players and officials.

As a starting point, Chigamula pledged to sponsor a strength-testing match involving his newly adopted side and Bunda College at Bunda during the first week of November.

Councillor for Maria Ward Adamson Lipenga and chairperson for the tournament’s organising committee Catherine Mkamanga hailed Chigamula for accepting to sponsor the bonanza.

The Ward Councillor also hailed the Area 49 based businessman for initiating several development projects in the area.

Amongst the development projects undertaken by Chigamula in the area include construction of a fence and drilling of a borehole at Kalonga Primary School, construction of a school block at Nkomachi Primary School and a Police Unit at Dubai.

I was wondering, how a normal team can choose the name Eleven Bongos which is associated with the infamous Area 36 gangsters. Indeed their behavior therefore is not a surprise. However I commend Lifnos Chigamula for the developmental initiativite he is undertaking apart from sponsoring my favourite game of POOL.
