Chikhwawa Council officials bitter with Police

Chikhwawa District Council is bitter with Chikhwawa Police for “arresting” and ‘ill-treating’ some members of its staff following the theft of about K2 million from the council’s confers.

The council including the District Commissioner, a Mr A.B.C Mdoko is also suspecting some of the law enforcers of having a hand and shielding the robbers who broke into council’s offices on December 24, according to inside sources.

According to the council, none of the arrested employees was involved but the police went ahead to arrest and charged them with negligence charges. The arrested accounts assistants, who appeared before Chikhwawa Magistrate Court and given bail after denying the charge, are momentarily identified as Miss Harawa, Mr Bizimack, Mr Chozi and Mr Chikapa.

The police also arrested a guard, a Mr Domingo who is said to have alerted the police upon seeing the robbers who concealed their faces with masks.

The robbers raided the offices a day after the law enforcers had asked for fuel from the council to conduct patrols during the festive seasons and they were given 30 litres of fuel. And they got more litres from Presscane Limited.

“After hearing the guard’s side of the story, the police officers and the assembly’s officials were convinced that the offices were broken into by robbers.

“But we were surprised the next day when the police summoned all accounts assistants and took then to court to answer what they called negligence charges,” said one of the sources.

The source further claimed that the law enforcers are not showing commitment to investigate and track the robbers, arguing that the accounts assistants’ negligence has cost the assembly about K2 million, thereby raising more suspicion that they are shielding the robbers..

Meanwhile, the Police have also summoned the council’s former Director of Finance, Hassani Assani who was transferred to Machinga mid last year.

“We are suspecting they could be the same police officers who came to steal the money. Why are they so defensive when suggestions to investigate and track down the robbers are put forward?

“They know something and they are trying to bend the rightiful procedures regarding the matter. We regret to have given them fuel. Their coming on the eve of the incident, was a ploy to brain wash us,” said the source.

There was no immediate comment from Chikhwawa Police spokesperson, Sunday Ngulube as his mobile number could not be reached.
