Chikwawa police unit stoned, murder suspect attacked in mob justice

Security authorities in Chikhwawa are analyzing an incident in which a police unit at Makhuwira was stoned and a murder suspect dragged outside and severely wounded as villagers bayed for his blood.

A police officer in Chikhwawa Mike Munama  said the suspect Kaitano Mangani who, according to the communities had mental illness, found the mother of the baby Jennifer Mike working in her farm and later started hacking her.

He is accused of murdering a young boy in the area.

“He was really roughed up and he is in severe condition at the district hospital. The villagers stoned and broke glass panes at the police unit. They took him out and started beating him,” said one of the police officers.

He said the swift response from the district headquarters response team saved the life of Munama.

There have been several incidents of breaking into police cells in several districts including Dedza where over 30 villagers were arrested in a dawn police raid.

The suspect who hailed from Mangwalala village, Traditional Authority Khwethemule in Thyolo district is reported to have died a few hours later after he was brought to Chikwawa district hospital for medical attention on deep wounds and cuts he sustained from the beating.

The mother of the baby, Jenifer Mike aged 24 from Zaonenji village; Traditional Authority Makhwira is admitted to Chikwawa hospital for treatment.
