Chilima rejects PP runningmate: Joyce Banda, Chilumpha pull out of UTM alliance

Vice President and UTM Party  President Saulos Chilima is said to have rejected the proposal to have former President Joyce Banda’s son Roy Kachale as his runningmate which has led to Peoples Party (PP) pulling out of an opposition electoral alliance liance.

Chilima: I will pick my running mate
PP announced through a statement released Monday that it has pulled out of the alliance because UTM “has failed to comply with the terms of the agreement and the solidarity that existed between UTM and PP.”
A statement signed by PP spokesman Ackson Kalaile Banda said the agreement was was fir UTM  to pick a running from PP.
But sources close to the talks said Joyce Banda was insisting that Chilima picks Kachale as his runningmate.
“But Chilima has looked at the interests of the nation over the interests of a family. This is what has led to PP to pull out of the coalition,” said the source.
UTM Publicity Director Joseph Chidanti Malunga said the party will come with an official response to the matter later in the day.
Tikonze Peoples Movement President Dr Cassim Chilumpha has also withdrawn from the alliance.
Chilumpha, who is former State Vice President, said UTM has failed to honour “some of the terms of the agreement.”
He said they would no contest the elections.
Earlier, former President Joyce Banda praised Chilima as the right person with energy to win the presidential election scheduled on May 21 this year.
Meanwhile, Banda is expected to present her nomination papers at Comesa Hall in Blantyre on Tuesday at 2pm according to an official program released by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
A week ago, Banda called upon opposition parties to join forces in an electoral alliance if they are to defeat the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) during the polls.

  18. This coalition was a non starter as it was a group of disparate people desperately trying to concoct what they thought would be palatable for Malawians. This saga is like watching a cooking show and the recipe is a disaster – texture, taste, color and even presentation disaster.
    Chilima, with all his bravado, should have seen ndale ya pa mpira (tr. a political trap) being set here. Perhaps, he’s so deep in his own ego, that he didn’t see this one coming. Unbelievable that achina Joisi Banda, perhaps the least strategic politician in this country, can actually expose Chilima’s underbelly this way; and in doing so, actually embarrass the guy too.
    And, by joining the so-called coalition (of convenience), Chilima has made it clear to everyone that even he himself doesn’t believe that he can win the Presidency.       Honestly this is childish at display. How did they ever think that they would get away with this? Under Joyce Banda Malawi suffered a level of corruption and nepotism never seen before or since in Malawi. Joyce Banda is a hypocrite and corrupt nepotistic woman. Her son has no experience except of running a night club and made millions of dollars corruptly when his mother was President. Why did she not want Ibrahim Matola a young, experienced and dynamic politician as the VP to Chilima?
    As for Cassim Chilumpha this man is destined to the dustbin of history. He has no standing whatsoever or relevance in the currant political set up in Malawi. As useless as a dog’s faeces. Muluzi did it, Mutharika did it and JB should have been the last person to propose her son for Vice Presidency. I feel betrayed by their empty promises and my heart bleeding looking at their evil intentions over the imminent needs of the general citizenry, Malawians.   62. PP is a party of no chance to be in government. Roy Kachale is nobody in Malawi politics. The fact that he is a son of Joyce Banda and also a member of parliament in Zomba does not qualify him to be running mate in UTM and PP and other parties coalition
    There is nobody in PP who can be a running to UTMs Chilima apart from a very overweight and old Joyce Banda

    UTM should try to partner with Atupele Muluzi and UDF the two young men can form a very viable alternative to MCP and DPP by winning the hearts and souls of the youthful Malawi nation.

  64. I am not UTM and I cant be but I support Chilima’s decision to reject JB’s son name. We should as a country avoid forming political monarchies. Her son is unknown to most of voters and it will be huge task to sell him to Malawians. He poses a risk to the party. It will be like selling chinangwa chowawa. JB has same mentality as that of Bakili of replacing themselves with sons without necessarily looking at their sons potential and capabilities. Both JB and Cassim were tested but unfortunately they did not impress most Malawians. I doubt what will make them more productive and wiser this time? This should be lesson for DPP’s choice of a running mate which might break or unite the party
