Malawian music icon Lucius Banda has taken an extraordinary step by giving credit to Skeffa Chimoto after the release of the latter’s promotion songs Chinamuluma Chakuda, Dalitsani Okondeswa, Neneleni and Ndilandireni.
Chinamuluma Chakuda is currently the biggest hit on the Malawian music scene and it is likely to propel Skeffa to the top of the charts.
Skeffa is due to launch the album Chikondi at the end of the month at Wakawaka Europa in Lilongwe.
In an unsolicited interview, Lucius noted that having listened to the music, he was thoroughly impressed by Skeffa’s creativity.
“I had a chance to sample Skeffa Chimoto’s latest music. To be honest I am moved and impressed by the great work of art in it. The ability to move on with a different tune and message is the risk that I see many young singers and bands alike, shying away from.
“To be a great artist is what Skeffa has done. Osangoti poti ka nyimbo aka kanabeba last album nde kungovuula the same tune again and again, no. Skeffa, just like Lulu, are the forces that are really emerging now especially now that Malawians are joining the rest of the world in knowing how music should sound. Soon there will be no space for cheap music that just works because of people musical illiteracy,” Lucius said.
On his part, the soft-spoken Skeffa said it is an honour to be recognized by music icons such as Lucius.
“It is humbling when fellow musicians give you credit for a job well done. It spurs one on and encourages one to work even harder,” said Skeffa, who noted that the demand for his album has been overwhelming since he released the four singles three weeks ago.
“But we had already set the date and we will only release the album after the launch,” he said.
