Chinsinga backs Chakwera remarks calling Mutharika failed leader: ‘No need for opposiiton leader to apologize’
University of Malawi’s (Unima) Chancellor College political scientist BlessingsChinsinga has said there is no need for opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarous Chakwera to apologise or resign for saying President Peter Mutharika has “completely failed to run the nation”.
Chakwera said the southern African country’s socio-economic ills were as a result of Mutharika’s failure and descfribed his M leadership as one which is like a pair of scissors designed to cut the thread by which the country is hanging and send the citizens spiraling into the abyss of deeper levels of poverty..
The MCP president who is also leader of opposition in parliament cited incessant blackouts and the increasing cost of living as signs that the Mutharika and his administration had failed.
But ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held a news conference where the party gurus dressed down Chakwera, describing him as lacking integrity and obsessed with delusions of political self righteousness.
DPP publicity secretary Francis Kasaila, acting secretary general Francis Mphepo and presidential aide Hetherwick Ntaba in chorus called for Chakwera to resign from the position of leader of Opposition in Parliament and apologise over his remarks suggesting that President Mutharika and DPP had failed.
Apart from DPP attack on Chakwera, government has also been mobilising traditional leaders to be appearing on tax-funded television MBC castigating castigating the opposition leader.
But Chinsinga said there is no need for Chakwera to apologize or retract the statement because as opposition leader he has such constitutional mandate to keep government in check.
“Chakwera as leader of opposition has a constitutional duty to keep government in checking and I don’t think there is need for him to apologize following that speech and further to that Chakwera was talking about government policies and nothing personal,” Chinsinga told Nyasa Times.
Chinsinga said Malawi is a democratic state and of freedom of speech is enshrined in the Republican constitution..
In his scatching attack to Mutharika , the leader of opposition said: “I have a simple message for President Mutharika: Your Excellency, you have failed. You have failed the civil service because you have failed to lead. You have failed the taxpayers because you have failed to end the corruption of your own government.
“You have failed the young people because you have failed to keep the doors of our universities open… You have failed the Vice President because you have failed to maximise the young man’s talents for progress,” Chakwera said.
According to Chakwera, allowing Mutharika to continue leading the country beyond this term will be hammering the final nail in the coffin of Malawi’s development.
Chakwera has since said Malawians were the best judges on what he said and the tantrums of DPP and government spokespersons.

ALL this rhetoric against the DPP was order of the day during campaign in 2014 while the party was in opposition. The DPP was castigated and shot down using all types of arsenal by the Joyce Banda regime. The message of cursing the DPP was on every radio and media. The guy had only Galaxy at his disposal as a campaign tool. This one radio was used in a best way and the message could easily catch people’s minds and was proven on the 20th May 2014 when he bruised other candidates and him got the mantle. Mind you he was in opposition with the Chakweras but managed to put the sitting president to number 3. But this time I wonder what is it that Chakwera has done that people can follow him to a party whose history is that of shedding innocent blood. The chance for Chakwera was in 2014. Losing that chance he should not expect a win in future elections. In Malawi you can not win elections with people from one region. Which particular areas in the south has made Chakwera to win the opinion polls? Chambe is just very open with the truth and he is talking about realities on the ground. Only that you people are deliberately giving yourself blindness so that you can not see things on the ground. What you should do is to advise Chakwera to invade the south so that he converts some to his party. But the man has no campaign strategy and he can not win any percentage from the south. But APM everyone can see how he is penetrating the centre. He penetrated the region while in opposition, and this time it will be a plus, period!!

Frankly speaking, Mutharika is a disgrace to the nation. He is a complete failure in all areas. He failed to demonstrate the kind of leader most of us we thought he could be. What he is doing now, bringing the chiefs, party gurus to MBC to attack critics is a typical of a failed leader. What he needs to do is to act on the issues Malawians are complaining about so that we can see positive changes. Otherwise, we are now afraid that the next few years will be hard times to be in Malawi. We come to realize that this guy is not there to help Malawi move, but to spend his retirement period after working in diaspora. This is a mistake that we as Malawians have to correct. Mr Political Scientist, I disagree with you when you defend Chakwera on the point of him being not personal with Mutharika.In fact reading from his speech from the interview, Chakwera was personal all the way criticizing Mutharika directly. In Politics, we attack systems, policies and strategies and pinpoint areas where these are weak. Chakwera always fails to critique the current government systems,policies and strategies and unearth all the weak areas. This is because he doesn’t know how. He will always talk Mutharika this, Mutharika that as if he is on the pulpit preaching.Mutharika is not a system, policy or strategy. For example he is not a policy behind the university fees hike or closure. But Chakwera castigated him as such. That is personal; period!
