Chitipa United registers first win: Malawi TNM Super League

After playing seven games without a win, TNM Super League rookies, Chitipa United, could finally afford a smile after beating Azam Tigers 3-2 at Mzuzu stadium on Sunday.

Chitipa United coach Kondwani Mwalweni: It feels nice to win

Coming from a 1 nil victory against Mzuni FC on Saturday, Tigers hoped to collect another maximum three points as they attacked with vigour but goalkeeper Lloyd Munthali was steady in goals for Chitipa United.

23 minutes into the game, Chitpa United’s Emmaunael Muyira received the ball inside Tigers’ half. He raced with the ball goal wards and unleashed a powerful shot which goalkeeper William Thole fumbled and Alick Phiri was at the right position to open fire for the ball to hit the net. 1-0 to Chitipa United.

In the 40th minute, from 40 metres, Wacheta Mwenefumbo pulled the trigger and there was nothing the Tigers goalie could do before realizing that the ball was in his net. 2 nil to Chitipa United.

But just after 2 minutes from recess, Tigers won a corner. Mayeso Mphanje tossed the ball from the left corner flag into the box. Stain Pendame rose high to welcome the ball with a powerful header that landed into Chitipa United’s net. 2-1.

Tigers gained confidence in the game and piled more and more pressure on Chitipa United. The result was that a defender for Chitipa United handled the ball inside the 18 metre box forcing referee Stephano Gomani to award Tigers a penalty from which Stain Pendame converted to register his brace in the game. 2-2.

But five minutes before full time, Chitipa United won a free kick inside their opponents’ half on the right. The kick found Christopher Mtambo outside the 18 metre box. Without hesitation, he unleashed a thunderous shot beating goalkeeper William Thole in the line of duty.

After the final whistle, it was Chitipa United 3, and Azam Tigers 2.

Speaking after the game, Tigers coach Patricio Kulemeka said it was Chitipa United’s day.

“Chitipa United prepared very well for us. They saw us play against Mzuni and they had a good game plan. I however wish to congratulate my boys for collecting three points out six away,” added Kulemeka.

The winning coach Kondwani Mwalweni said it felt good to collect three points.

“Previously we had problems in scoring but today my boys played according to instructions. My defenders got carried away when we were leading 2 nil but fortunately we managed to score the winning goal,” remarked Mwalweni.

I am not football crazy but I have keenly followed Chitipa United’s progress. This first win has really pleased me. I am sure you can do much better now, with raised spirits.

Keep it up

The game was never at 2 goals a piece. It was 3 goals to 1 and then Tigers got the 2 second goal in added time.
