Chiwamba Initiative to host Kamuzu Day gospel concert in Lilongwe

A Lilongwe based grouping, Chiwamba Initiative, will on 14th May bring together some of Malawi’s popular gospel artists for a gospel concert that has been organised to raise funds for the completion of a school block.

The show, labeled ‘Kamuzu Day Gospel Concert’ will be held at the ICA Marquee in the capital Lilongwe, according to a statement made available to Nyasa Times by the Initiative.

The grouping, a brainchild of Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) journalist, Gloria Masanza, wants to raise funds for the completion of a school block that will benefit underprivileged children of Tidi village, T/A Chiwamba, in Lilongwe rural.

Among the popular gospel artists expected to perform at ICA Marquee are Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Allan Chirwa, Elijah C, the Great Angels Choir, Marvelous Deeds, Kamuzu Barracks Choir, Kelvin Shema and King David.

According to the organisers, proceeds from the show will be used to purchase iron sheets, lime and cement, among others.

The members of the Initiative with the help of the community want to complete the school block before the start of the next school calendar in September, 2013.

Masanza initiated the idea last year and mobilised fellow Lilongwe based journalists and other professionals after seeing the need to provide Tidi village with a nursery school, a junior primary school and other infrastructure to benefit young people.

Then in September 2012 the members of the initiative launched the school block project which they are constructing in Tidi village and will assist needy children aged between two and six years.

During the initial stages of the project, the initiative was assisted by Toyota Malawi and now the Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) has also pledged K50 000 towards the purchase of some of the completing materials of the school block.

One of the members, Joab Chikhanza (also a ZBS journalist) said since the project started members of the initiative, community members of Chiwamba and institutions of goodwill have pooled resources together to build a two-roomed structure which is now at roofing level.
