Cobbe sack coach Phambala

TNM Super League rookies Cobbe Barracks have fired its coach Billy Phambala and his assistant Chifundo Masapula due to a run of bad results.

Reports from Zomba indicate that after a heated meeting of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) team’s rank and file, it was felt that the two have failed in their duties as evidenced by results so far.

“’The executive is not happy with the performance of the team as it continues to donate points,” a source from the military team’s executive told Nyasa Times.

“Results have not satisfied the officials. There was no evidence that the situation would fundamentally change,” he added.

Cobbe is anchoring the log table with three points from eight games.

“It was felt that there was need to bring in someone with new ideas so that the team moves out of the relegation zone,” said the official.

Phambala enjoyed a glittering playing career as a midfielder with Red Lions before moving into coaching by taking charge of Cobbe.

Nyasa Times understands that former Red Lions player Nelson Chirwa has taken over as care taker coach.   The 37-year-old corporal at Cobbe Barracks has Grade C coaching licence.

Last weekend, Cobbe were beaten 1-0 by Civo on Saturday and 2-0 by Blue Eagles 24 hours later on their central region outing.

Earlier this month, Azam Tigers fired coach Macdonald Mtetemera and replaced him with Leo Mpulula.

The move seems to be working for Tigers who are now on the winning run.
