College of Medicine start classes as University of Malawi fee row rages on

College of Medicine (CoM) students have started their new year amid disagreements over fees in the University of Malawi.

CoM students union president Francis Matiya confirmed the classes have started in earnest on Monday.

“Some people have paid the new revised fees but the majority are awaiting a decision by the University of Malawi students union decision on the matter,” said Matiya.

A couple of weeks ago, President Peter Mutharika ordered the reduction of the fees by K50000 from the increased K300000 but students want the fees go down further owing to the harsh economic climate.

However College of Medicine authorities say they have not received communication from the government on the reduction of fees.

University of Malawi student leadership is on Thursday expected to come out clear on whether they have endorsed the K50000 fee reduction or not.

University Council please expel every one and make fresh advertisement to new students, tiwone zomwe Ayuba / Sikwese and others will do.
