Commonwealth officials visit Malawi Electoral Support Network

Two Commonwealth officials Clara Cole and Kofi Sawyer, both political affairs officers visited Malawi Electoral Support Network (MESN) this week to appreciate the local organisation’s preparedness for the forthcoming tripartite lections.

The two officials also wanted to have a feeling of the current political situation in the country.

“They were on a fact finding mission before they send their observers. They also wanted to see how prepared we are getting for the elections. We are happy that they visited us. We have shared with them what we have done so far,” said MESN board member Lewis Msiyadungu just after the meeting.

Among others, Msiyadungu said MESN had trained and deployed observers across the country to observe electoral processes taking place in the run up to the elections. He said the observers will be submitting monthly reports which

MESN will depend on to compile reports for public consumption.

Sawyer who is political affairs officer for African Section described their visit to MESN as fruitful.

MESN is implementing three crucial electoral programmes; parallel vote tabulation with funds from UK’s Department for International Development (DfID); Long Term Observation funded by United States Agency for International Development  (USAID) and Malawi Election Information Centre also known as Situation Room funded by Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA).
