Congoma wants to discipline politically charged NGOs

Council for Non Governmental Organisation (Congoma) says it is finding ways on how best to discipline activists who are politically charged.

MacBain Mkandawire: Some NGOs are actually PGO’s (pro-government organisations)

Congoma chairman MacBen Mkandawire said there are some NGOs who solely register to back government mediocrity.

“Some NGOs are in politics against the rules of NGO board,” said Mkandawire.

He said it is sad that some people register their NGOs just to back ruling party and government agendas when they do not have activities on the ground, like projects for the people.

Mkandawire said it has always been difficult to deal with such politically charged activists as some of them are not registered with Congoma.

“Some choose to register through the companies Act while others register with the NGO board, so is not easy to discipline them because they are not our members,” he said.

But Emmie Chanika of Civil Liberties Committee said people should not be forced to register with Congoma.

She said NGO Board is the only lawful body where NGOs should be registered.

Non Governmental Individuals who can’t convince donors to fund them often looks at available opportunities for their survival. Unfortunately they become bootlickers and lick whatever opportunity is available. Defending government is one easy way of getting easy money. Malawians have seen a number of NGIs travelling on presidential trips and accorded a number of opportunities including positions in boards. This is sad especially when the country need united and genuine NGOs to speak on behalf of vulnerable Malawians.

Ben, what are you talking about? Your statement only shows you feel good when NGOs senselessly hit at Government?

This Mkandawire exposes himself. According to him, it’s wrong if NGOs back governmen and right if they behave like opposition parties. Shame Mkandawire. Mtumbuka sadzatheka basi.

for Mcbain Mkandawire to call other CSOs pro-government the converse is also true that those that are not pro-government, are pro-opposition. You better keep quiet and mind your own pro- opposition business. Do not expose yourself.
