Continental Holdings becomes 17th company to list on Malawi Stock Exchange
Continental Holdings plc has become the 17th company to list on the main board of the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE), in a move officials say underscores growing investor confidence in the country’s capital markets.

Speaking at the listing ceremony in Blantyre, CHL plc chairperson Gibson Ngalamila said the company remained committed to creating shareholder value, supporting clients and contributing to national prosperity, revealing that more than 10,000 investors had purchased shares during the company’s initial public offering.
Reserve Bank of Malawi deputy governor for economics and regulation, Henry Mathanga, said the listing was evidence of investor confidence in the MSE, and urged other companies to follow suit in raising capital through the exchange rather than relying solely on bank lending.
The listing adds to a gradually deepening domestic capital market that remains small by regional standards, with just 17 companies now trading on the main board.
Malawian officials have long sought to encourage more firms, particularly larger private companies, to seek public listings as a means of diversifying corporate financing options and broadening participation in equity markets beyond the country’s traditional reliance on bank credit.
The MSE’s growth trajectory comes against a backdrop of persistent macroeconomic headwinds facing Malawi, including chronic foreign exchange shortages and elevated inflation, both of which have complicated the operating environment for listed companies and prospective new entrants alike.
Analysts say a more liquid and diversified stock exchange could help channel domestic savings into productive investment, supporting broader economic development goals, though the pace of new listings has historically remained modest.
The involvement of more than 10,000 retail investors in Continental Holdings’ IPO is likely to be viewed as a positive signal for retail participation in Malawi’s capital markets, an area regulators have sought to expand as part of broader financial inclusion efforts across the country.
