Smarting from announcing their partnership with Premier Bet Malawi, Wizards  were close to defeat but only equalized through what looked like a controversial goal a few minutes away from the close of regulation time.

Mzuzu United led through a Collen Nkhulambe’s 52 minute strike and were in control of the game till the last five minutes of regulation time.

Few minutes away from the final whistle, referee Ben Tchongwe awarded Wizards a controversial goal after he had already blown a whistle for a free-kick to Mzuzu United following a handball by a Wizard  player.

The decision did not go well with both officials and players of Mzuzu United who were seen confronting the referee and the fourth official. The tension took almost five minutes before Football Association of Malawi representatives intervened in the fracas.

The match was then forced to post-match penalties and three Mzuzu United players missed their penalties while only one player missed for Wizards. 3-1 the final result in favor of Wizards F.C.

Speaking to Nyasa Times after the game,  Mzuzu United Coach Peter Botha said what happened during the game is a big shame to the country’s football and said they will soon  file an official complaint to FAM.

“This is a big shame to our football. My players were demoralized with the dubious goal which the referee awarded to Wizards. How can a referee change a decision after he had already blown a whistle for a free-kick? We will write the Football Association but despite all that we wish them good luck in the next stage of the cup,” said Botha.

Wizards F.C Technical Director Peter Mponda dedicated the win to their new sponsor Premier Bet Malawi who signed a 1-year deal with the club during the week.

“We are happy to go through despite playing poorly. Sometimes you need lucky to win games and today it was our day. Referees are human beings too and can make mistakes. We admit that the goal was really controversial but the referee’s decision was final,” said Mponda.

Wizards next game is a meeting with Blue Eagles in the TNM Super League on Wednesday.
