National Woman Football Committee (NWFC) says absence of corporate sponsorship in women football is hindering the development of the sport in the country, as it has evidently been seen with the lack of participation in tournaments by the national team.
The national women football team bounced back from the mashes of hibernation last year with a friendly match against Tanzania last November after an absence of 4 years due to funding.
Speaking in an exclusive interview NWFC president Severia Chalira said there is need for the corporate world to come in and assist woman football claiming the sport has the potential l to put Malawi on the map.
“For a long time women football has not received the funding it deserves and it most time it has been shunned and left behind. I believe with corporate sponsorship and support woman football can do wanders, if we invest much in it,” she said.
Chalira further said, NWFC and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) it’s trying their best to develop women football in the grass roots with the meagre resources it has at its disposal.
She however said there is need for the corporate world to pump in more money into the sports to safeguard the future and success of woman football in the country.
Chalira therefore went on to appeal for financial assistance saying women football is a unique and there is need to support girls saying women football has been living in shadows of their male counterpart for a long time.
In related development Chalira has revealed that for the first time FAM in conjunction with FIFA have assisted the association with funding worth K7.5 million to be used for national football league across the three regions in Malawi.
“Each region will receive K 2.5 million from the money we got from FIFA. We hope the creation of these leagues will help the association to unearth talent for the national team because our girls will be active in football and this will also help girls refrain from immoral behaviors,” she added.
Currently, the Malawi National Women’s football side is ranked 134 out of 140 member associations.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
