Councils fail to give out free face masks despite K1bn funding

Councils are yet to start giving out free face masks to people two months after they were directed to do so.

The tailors sewing face masks to halt the spread of coronavirus

In January this year,  Treasury released K1 billion to all district and city councils for the procurement of face masks for free distribution.

This exercise was meant to help people who cannot afford to buy facemasks to prevent themselves from the Covid 19 pandemic.

In the gazetted laws, it is mandatory for people to wear face masks in public places as a measure to contain the spread of the virus.

Some councils are still at the procurement stage, over two months after receiving the funding.

Blantyre City Council which received K44 million to the estimated population of 800 thousand beneficiaries.

Zomba City Council which received K11 million for the estimated 200 thousand beneficiaries.
