Couple arrested over missing baby, father found hiding in sack

Nkhunga Police Station in Nkhotakota is keeping in custody a couple following a mysterious disappearance of their two week old child in the district.

The station’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ignatius Esau confirmed the arrest of Issa Byson,35, from Misoya Village Traditional Authority Liwonde in Machinga District and Adjah Phiri,32, from Kanyenda Village, Senior Chief Kanyenda in the same district.

He explained that Byson, who has two wives married Phiri some years back but separated due to reasons known to themselves only to reunite early this year.

“On November 4, 2017, the couple was blessed with a baby boy who happened to be their second born child only to go missing under mysterious circumstances on the night of November 18, 2017,” he said.

Esau explained that after realizing that the baby was missing, he informed relatives who organised themselves to inform the baby’s father at the second wife’s house because that was where he spent a night.

The PRO narrated that the informants got suspicious after hearing that Byson was not at the house but rather had gone to his work place.

“Phiri’s relatives got suspicious, demanded for a search in the house and to their surprise, they found the father hiding in the sack under the bed. The relatives then took him to police where he was arrested,” Esau explained, while highlighting that the wife was arrested days later as she showed no action of remorse towards the missing of her baby.

The police are appealing to members of the public who might have information leading to the location of the said baby to come forth with the information as soon as possible.

Another baby got missing two years ago at Mbuna Village in the same area when a woman lost her baby while sweeping.

The baby was found a day later at Liwaladzi, some 15 kilometres away from where it was stolen.

The baby was found crying miserably in an old pit latrine with its mouth, nose and ears filled with ants.

This baby was admitted at Matiki Health Centre in Dwangwa for some days and it survived.
