Court jails granny to 10 years IHL for attempting to sell nephew at K2mil

A court in Mulanje has sent a 67 year old granny to 10 years in jail with hard labour for attempting to sell his orphan nephew.

Mulanje magistrates court heard that Dave Makuta went to Ibrahim Bakuwa, a businessman and offered him the 13 year old nephew, Beaton Phambala for sale at K2 million.

Bakuwa reported the matter to Group Village Headman Mwanakhu who reported the issue to police.

Magistrate Smart Maruwasa said what Makuta did was inhumane.

He said the orphan was supposed to be taken care of with love.

Although Makuta pleaded not guilty, he handed Makuta with the 10 year sentence.

The nephew now lives with his aunt in the same district.
