Court set to rule on Malawi cops aiding illegal immigrants
The Mzuzu First Magistrate Court is on Thursday set to rule on three police officers who are accused of using a police vehicle to ferry illegal immigrants from Karonga to Viphya forest in Mzimba.
Leonard Mtokoma, who was head of Police Mobile Force in Mzuzu and his juniors Tionge Nyirongo and Ernest Issa are accused of smuggling 25 illegal immigrants from Ethiopia in 2014.
They were charged with aiding and abaiting illegal immigrants and abuse of office.
One of the accused, a driver, told the court he was ordered by Mtokoma to ferry the illegal immigrants using a police vehicle to a hidden place in a forest.
First Grade magistrate Gladys Gondwe said she would make the ruling on Thursday.
