Court to rule on Chilima, Chakwera  K9bn legal fees Monday

Registrar of the High Court Agnes Patemba is this Monday. expected to make a ruling on whether the legal team of President Lazarus Chakwera and veep Saulos Chilima should be paid the staggering K9 billion or not for representing the two in the election case.

Patemba: Ruling on Monday

One of the lawyers who represented Chilima in the case, Khumbo Soko has confirmed that the ruling has been set for Monday next week.

“The registrar presided over the arbitration on Tuesday. She is currently looking at the objections and she will indeed give her verdict on Monday,” said Soko.

The Constitutional Court ordered the state to pay legal costs for Chilima and Chakwera and the legal team for the two put the figure at K9 billion.

However, the state then before the change of government objected to the bill, saying it was too high for the job.

  1. We had chickens being sold at K35,000 each in the previous regime and now we have this thievery of tax payers’ money in the form of legal fees. Malawi will never change.

  2. All Chilimacases come positive because even judgws have a share.. Just look at the situation, the court was involved in the case, the minister of justcice was part of the case, the artoney general was part of the case, the president and vice president. The outcome of the case will be that they will award the money because its a syndicate. if these are the chargesthat lawyers charge why would they waste time seeking work in government where they get peanuts. I am talking of Silunfwe and Mvalo. On top of this Bakili Muluzi case as the longest case if we calculate based on the rate charged by these lawyers would now be MK3.4 trillion. .These lawyers should be flying jets if this is the kind of fees they charge. Imagine each lawyer was taking over MK1.3m per day. Rgis is grand heist by men in robes. If this is realistic give the case to Nriva or MWaungulu.

  3. Amzanu aja boma linawalipila kale osapitanso ku arbitration. Awansi boma lomwelo liwalipilanso. Koma inu!!! This is why we wil be very poor

  4. This is where people will see that Chakwera and Chilima are thieves. There is no need for them to be paid that money at all.

    1. I think, Bwana Kaka, you have either taken this issue out of context. In the first place, this money, when paid, will not go to Chilima and Chakwera. In any case, if it were not for the courts to rule against the defenders (APM + MEC) with costs, that bill was going to be paid by Chilima and Chakwera for the legal services they were provided. The figure looks huge, but one has to take into consideration how many lawyers were involved, how many hours each of them invested in the case, how long the case took, and the grades of of the lawyers. If anything, we should fault the legal fees schedule for the land. Court cases are always expensive and that is why over 90% of the Malawian population cannot manage to hire lawyers for their cases.

  5. Easy. That is obvious. We will pay them K9b. But we will ‘witch hunt’ Jane Mayemu Ansah, kalekeni, fandika, et al and they will remember the day they were born! […regret the day!]
